Underhood insulation?

I originally posted this in a regional forum by mistake, but:

I've had my M4 for a couple months now. Love the car, but I think the lack of a pad under the hood sort of lets the engine compartment down. They could have a least sprayed some clear on the underside...

Anyway, it looks like the holes are there for the fasteners that would hold the pad on, so does anyone know if a regular 4 series hood pad would fit? Any reason not to have a hood pad? Can't weigh much.

I know some people won't/don't care, but I think it just looks "unfinished".

Thanks!

Those pads end up looking horrid over time. No thanks! I much prefer my painted/clear coated under hood that is easy to wipe clean.

Is your clear coated? Mine's just a dull orange on the underside.

I'll take a photo. It's not as shiny as the exterior, but it's definitely not dull.

Maybe it is different on individual colors

That may be the case because the underside of the hood on my YMB car was more dull.

My E92 M3 had underhood insulation. Seems to me like this is a another way for BMW to cut costs on the f80. No reason not to have insulation.

Is your hood too hot? If not, what reason is there to have it other than "no reason not to have it"?

And how else did BMW cut costs on the F8x? By making it a far superior car in practically every way?

I learned it was to save weight on the M cars, since sound deadening to the engine is maybe not so important in an M car.

But I also thought that the E92 M3 had this missing too, so maybe I am wrong. --MW

My E92 did have it. I had an E92 just traded it in for a 2017 F80. Looks like something is missing under the hood. I say cost cutting.

Pretty insignificant detail to me. I agree with Sedan_Clan that it ends up looking dirty and not fitting right over time. My E60 M5 had it and honestly I think it looks a lot better with just the metal. I could be weight savings. Maybe 1-2 lbs

Isn't the turbo intercooler right on top? Which you want to keep cool so the turbos don't develop issues. I'd say that's a pretty big reason not to have a pad/ insulation on the hood as any added layer will trap more heat in there.

According to this, it was deleted to save weight. Page 22:

My wife's 2011 E92 335is Coupe doesn't have underhood insulation, but apparently earlier model years of the E9x did have it. There was a thread in the E9x forums on Bimmerfest around that time where people with later years were getting the part number for the insulation from earlier years and installing it.

She likes not having the insulation because she puts all of her track stickers on the underside of the hood, less conspicuous that way.

Well there you have it. BMW removed the insulation in later years to cut costs. The earlier year models had it. Same with the E92 M3. I had a 2008 E92 M3 which had the insulation. BMW removed the insulation on the later year models of the E9x M3.

How do you know it was to cut costs, on an M car? If true, why wouldn't BMW "cut costs" on the non-M's first?

Is it really that big of a deal? You want to keep the heat IN?????? With an intercooler mounted atop the engine that could be affected by the pad making contact? Umm, okay!
