2016 F82...blown engine at 1000km

Sad day for my best pal. We both ordered F82 same time, his arrived first, and he sent it for 1000km oil change at BMW authorized dealership, apparently after the oil change during test drive, car stalled and would not restart.

They stripped the engine and found the cause as seen in pics below. Any idea what could have caused it on such a new car?

Its a grey import, so no warranty...obviously he will try to argue it happened under their watch.

Cant give out much info, as its not my car, but would appreciate any input...now im worried as my car will be arriving next month, same as his, its a grey import, so no manufacturer warranty

Sad to hear. Hope it gets resolved painlessly. Maybe someone went crazy with the car prior to it being shipped to your friend.

I'm assuming a non region standard vehicle, imported by the OP or an agent from another country.
We have these in the UK with Japanese cars also - Evo, Scoobs and GTR's direct from Japan - usually slightly better specced and cheaper but absolutely no warranties honoured by local dealers.
In the past, some dealers refused to carry out work on Gray Import vehicles, not sure if that is still such a big issue these days.

In our country, a brand new M4 from BMW is close to usd170,000. So ppl normally import grey import cars from Japan/UK, these are almost new, 1 year, or 2 year old vehicles which come with substantial savings, but no warranty.

This unit had delivery mileage and was brought in around usd120k

Obviously you both have the financial means to own something pricy, would it be worth it to ship the car back to its normal market for warrenty work? Explain to them that it is currently in the dealership hands in your market. See if BMW might help you with this since it is in one of their shops and i'm sure they can trust the word of a trained tech?

obviously this will just come down to an insurance claim issue and all that is required is to ship the product to a market that covers the insurance claim (aka warranty).

If this does happen again in your future, instead of an engine tear down... ship the car back? I would say even just offer to have your dealership crate the broken motor to ship only the motor to bmw in the correct market for inspection (with bmw's approval) and once they determine its a bad motor... they can ship your installer a new crate motor for install. Your costs should be the Removal/install/shipping of the motor in your grey market unless BMW wants to be kind to cover this under goodwill.

I have a US model car in Europe and on the question of warranty tje dealer told me he cant confirm I have warranty neither can he give a writen conformation my warranty is not valid so we decided to just go alng and solve potential issues as they come.

After a few months I was diagnosed with a faulty crank pully and chain gear and my car was fixed under warranty...

If your delaer really wants to help he can help you...

Wow... That was the most painful post I've ever read on this forum.

Best of luck to you , OP, in trying to obtain warranty coverage for this. Doesn't look cheap.

Yeah, the car was working fine, you dropped it off for service and it breaks down after service while they are test driving??? Seems like the highest probability is that they did something wrong. It's like the healthy guy that goes to hospital and dies during a routine check-up.

Sounds like they forgot to put oil back in before taking it out. If it was in for just an oil change why was the car out for a test drive??
