2017 X5 diesel
Does anyone know the reason why the 35d isn't available to build on BMW NA website?
I've talked to a few dealers and as most of the time, they know less then we do. Last dealer I spoke to is that they had 4 allocations for the year....? My best guess is that is is related to the EPA and "dieselgate" Anyone know the details? Cheers |

The reason they haven't updated the BMWNA website to feature the 35d is still a mystery at this point, but they are being produced. The extent to which they are produced may indeed be limited, thus the reason they aren't openly advertising them on the site. 2017 production was delayed due to a more lengthy EPA approval process.

I ordered one a couple of weeks ago and I'm picking it up at the Performance Center on 3/27. I don't understand why it's not on the configurator. What a shame. I'm sounding like a broken record I guess, but my 2014 X5 35d is absolutely the best family vehicle I've ever owned. I'm sure the 2017 will be even better.

when look at local dealers over the state. You see at least one x5d.
They don't seem to sell fast or don't bother to update the inventory. See comments about not finding diesel, well they are listed on the dealers sites... What seeing more and more of is Sdrives. South seldom sees weather needing all wheel |

I actually had an order in mid August and later cancelled it after waiting for a few months. It has disappeared from the BMW NA site in September I believe. Spoke to a dealer yesterday who said they are still being produced but of course they don't even show up on the website. So it is like a big secret where they still make them but don't really want people buying them.

BMW diesels have survived the post-VW debacle witch hunt. Hopefully there are enough customers to keep them on the market. I'm a converted high revving naturally-aspirated engine fan, and I'm convinced there's no better powertrain for family vehicles when the primary mission is long distance travel. I'll admit that the hybrid might be better for vehicles used mostly for short trips. The 40e powertrain is impressive, too. But when it comes to passing a slower vehicle on a two lane rural highway, the 35d's torque is really your friend! There's so much torque, it sometimes doesn't even need to downshift when you call for more power. After 3 years, anxiety about diesel availability is a non-issue. It can be found easily everywhere I go. Anybody shopping a for a long distance cruiser should at least try a 35d. If you don't, you'll never know what you're missing!

I even passed up on all the incentives in Dec to get a diesel, which would have easily saved me $3k. That being said, I love my 2017 X5d.

I'm talking to a few dealers that have them in stock, however demand outnumbers supply at this point.
At best I got 3k off MSRP, some even dare to ask for a market adjustment of 5k plus Seems that BMW NA is artificially keeping the allocations at a minimum. |

I was on the fence about ordering a diesel X5 back in 2014. But after almost 3 years, I have come to really enjoy the smoothness and available torque on my 2014 X5d. I live in Southern California, so there's diesel everywhere so I never had any issues. My only negative comment about diesel is that at very low speeds, like pulling up from a stop, you tend to hear the engine more than you would on a gasoline version. Other than that, it's really an amazing engine.

Joining the diesel love fest here too. Granted I have a E70 and a M57 motor vs your N57s.
Btw, you folks in SoCal and NorCal should try Propel Diesel. It's renewable stock manufactured to ASTM spec for diesel #2. The pros of using it is the ridiculously high cetane ratings. They add a bit of petro D#2 for lubricity and has better evaporative properties than D#2. It's going to be much friendlier to your DPFs when you're out of warranty like I am. And if you're a Trump supporter you're not supporting the petro-countries as we don't need to import petro from them though we do have to import palm oil from Malaysia to make this. And it's refined here in the USA. Or if you're a tree hugger, this fuel also reduces CO2 emissions. And if you just care about the bottom line, b/c it's a subsidized fuel here in CA, it'll be cheaper or on par with D#2's pricing. It's currently the cheapest D#2 in the bay area today. And before you jump all over my head about renewables, THIS IS NOT BIO-DIESEL Here's some link for info: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1194784 http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=864929 http://www.greencarreports.com/news/...yond-biodiesel http://www.dieselhpr.com/

I caved in and bought one of the lot yesterday.
Had to work hard to get almost 5 percent off the MSRP and goes against what I normally do. However, so many dealers wouldn't budge from MSRP. Had to have a car and It's awesome I'll post pics this weekend. |

(my opinion)
They are(were?) not on the configurator because the production run is limited, AND the people that want them KNOW they want them so they dont need to advertise them. They would / could drum up more orders for them than they can fill, so they dont put it on the configurator so that only those that really want them can get them. They would likely say its to not disappoint people since there are limited allocations, but I would counter with limited allocations because of the diesel issues of other brands. Maybe 2018s will have more diesel allocations for X5s? I have a 2016 X5d as the first diesel vehicle in my family, and agree its almost the perfect SUV, at least at this point. Only worry is long term emissions issues since my wife does not drive it "hard" enough. |
