USB capacity limitation?

I have a 2012 MY M3, with combox, and a USB port in the glovebox.

Is there a maximum capacity limitation for USB memory sticks here?

As far as I know, no. FAT32 has a max size of something like 2TB.

Great, thank you. Makes the CIC hard drive seem a bit puny by comparison!

It's possible BMW hard-coded a limit for whatever reason, but I thought I've seen people on here use 32GB and larger drives without any problem.

I use a 32GB in armrest, that way you also get cover-art if converted with a program that embed it, looks rather nice with split screen

I use a 64GB USB key in the armrest with about 45GB of music on it, works fine, but takes a while to load the artist/album info when the car is first turned on.

Are you talking about the armrest, or the glovebox. The glovebox is for loading music into the HD and has some ridiculously low capacity, like 2GB or some such, and will not read an iPod or thumbdrive on-the-run.

As others have said...I use a 32GB thumbdrive, in the console.

I was talking about the glovebox port, as I have an ipod plugged into the centre console port

The glovebox port definitely has more than 2GB capacity as it is used to upload GPS map data. I've used a 256GB capacity stick there without issues for loading map updates.

There may be a separate partition for maps...but...for music, it wouldn't save the contents of the 32GB thumb drive I use in the console...loaded maybe 4-5 playlists, tops.

If someone knows differently, I would love to hear how to load the 32GB jump drive onto the HD.

I see. That doesn't sound surprising, perhaps it's a totally different software setup for uploading music files.

I just went on a search for older threads...Looks like I was misinformed...I found (2) different references (from (2) different BMW models) stating 8GB and then another stating 12GB...

Still too small for my "library", but big enough for a reasonable playlist...that's assuming the maps/etc. don't eat up a bunch of capacity.
