Controversial topic: how to properly brake-in new engine?

Friend sent me this in e-mail few months ago. Thought it might be adequate to post since a lot of you are still in break-in period.

Not sure what to think...

Break in is simple. Follow directions in the manual.

Good reading, but I wont do it to mine. I would follow BMW instructions. The people working at BMW are no idiots. Anyway that procedure is probably carried out in the factory to a certain degree as they tend to test the engines and rev them prior to install. Plus the first oil is bound to have scrapings, particles so I think its best to have it out.

The page looks pretty... hmmm... unprofessional...

he just fixes the topic to one part of the engine, i think there is more than this piston ring seal to be "break in".

Why would you deviate from what the designers of the car tell you to do? There is documentation and product specs for a reason.

I will read the BMW manual they built the car and I will trust them.

Exactly. I figure the people who built/studied the engine and the break in dynamics are a lot smarter than me and I'll trust what they have to say. Having said that, though, I didn't break in the engine in my E46 at all and it still runs like a champ. I would never do that to an M, though, because I imagine the tolerances are a lot closer than a regular 3 series motor.

I have used this method to break in most of engines for 20 + years, and when I have done it I have zero problems and that includes 3 other M cars. The times when I followed the manual, is when those vehicles have had oil consumption issues.I know the the AMG engines are warmed up and dynoed at full power on their first runupfrom being built.Rearends & Transmissions do need some run in however, but that is no reason to not use the potential of the car for the 1st 2000 kms.

Drive it like you plan to drive it for the rest of the cars life...IE...drive it like you stole it at proper operating temps...JK

I really dont understand the break in period talked about in owners manuals when most automakers put new cars on the dyno for full power runs right after assembly. It kinda negates the whole "limiting RPM thing" in my mind....

swamp2/dangoma,

I searched for the link provided by the OP and all variants of it I could think of and the search engine can't find the other threads. If you could provide a link to these other threads that would be helpful and maybe people wishing to discuss this would post in the original thread and then this one would die and everyone can be happy?

When I was test driving a M3 a month ago the CA was trying to get me to rev it over 8000. The car had less than 100 miles on it and he WANTED me to violate the BMW breakin guidlines. In the intrest of the future owner of that car I refused, but no doubt I was the only one who did. So either he was an idiot(likely) or BMW has more liberal views on break in.

Keep in mind that the break in is mostly for the drivetrain, the engine has already been tested and redlined to meet the HP requirements.

That's why you don't buy demo cars.

Anyone that thinks most test drivers stay within the break in requirements is not living in a rational world. If you are test driving a 70K car with a defining characteristic being it's high reving engine you are going to want to experience that. If the dealer will not give you a properly broken in demo car then you will/should test what they give you. Buyers should be aware of (discount) dealer cars for that fact just as they would be aware of purchasing demos with 1,200 miles on them. Any buyer unaware of this fact will probably not follow the break in. Just because the dealers will scam people doesn't mean that buyers shouldn't properly test drive a 70K car before they buy it. If you are so worried about participating in a scam then don't deal with those dealers. Sadly, you'll probably never get a test drive because the dealers either do not offer them or they offer them sans caveat. Has anyone been to a dealer offering test drives in a properly broken in car?

On my test drive I absolutelty ripped the shit out of the engine, although it only had 700 odd miles on it.

This may sound harsh, but I did'nt give a fuck about adhering to break in procedures during the drive as its not my car and I dont care about the poor sod whos gonna buy it for a measly discount.
