Is the 6MT supposed to make clunky sounds?

Perhaps I'm not shifting correctly (been driving manuals all my life and never experienced this with any other car), but sometimes when shifting, there's a clunky feeling/sound as if the gearbox isn't secured to the car or something (I know that's not possible, but that's what it sounds/feels like).

Anyone noticed this?

Not on my 6MT. Take it to the dealer.

I get the occasional clunky thud from first to second or in low speed stop and go traffic at times. I asked and researched a few times and from what I deduced is that its normal. Are you getting it in all gears or specific moments?

I should have specified, this is precisely it. In stop and go traffic, 1st to 2nd or so. I suppose it's normal? The only way to test would be if I drove another F80 MT and compared.

check this thread out...
http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1126552

there has been a lot of concerns some say its due to the lightweight drive shaft others say its due to the heavy duty clutch. Some say they have no idea and experience no issues at all. If all else fails, take it to the dealer and get it checked. Its still under warranty

1st to 2nd espec after frying the clutch in stop and go will def make shifting unsmooth and clunky. bmw done a good job reducing vibrations up the shaft, dual mass flywheels tend to be clynky

sounds exactly like the issues I have times. Ive been driving manuals all my life. I even owned a RHD Toyota Altezza but this is my first bimmer 6MT and it is certainly different. It took some getting used to but I've worked my way around its quirks and love it.

It's actually not as bad specially in the newer BMWs. Used to drive a 350z. Thing sounded like I was winning jackpots in Vegas anytime I moved around 1st, 2nd, and neutral. It was considered normal.

I noticed the same on my Feb build. When I depress the clutch at low speed to come to a stop it clunks. I have gotten it on other BMWs but seems worse on the f80. Sucks that it happens mostly in parking lots

Interesting. I haven't noticed any clunks from my F80 and I drive almost exclusively around the city.

I tend to notice it occasionally when slowing down from 2nd to 1st at very low speeds (IE just as I'm pulling up to a light or a stop sign). It legitimately NEVER happens if I just coast almost to a stop in 2nd and then depress the clutch and drop to neutral. I realize its a "lazier" stop but it seems way less harsh - just need to clutch in before the engine starts to struggle with idle (which really means just about coming to a complete stop in this car anyway).

I've recently gotten super annoyed with how short 1st gear is in general in the car - with a nice smooth roll out 2nd gear has more than enough power to start nicely, smooth, without too much clutch wear in all but relatively steep incline situations.

I've never had this issue after 23k miles of very spirited driving + track time. Maybe you just have to adjust to driving the vehicle smoother..or have someone else that has an F80 6MT in your area drive your car to compare.

I don't think its the driver. TBH several people have chimed in as having the issue -- even myself. While I don't claim to be the stage by any means, I am damn confident I know my way around a manual transmission and from what I have researched, it seems very normal.

my 2 cents

I have that clunk/thud going from 1st to 2nd in my '15 M3. When I bought he car I thought something was wrong, but after reading many posts on this it seems people refer this to the "m clunk" and deem it normal. Just like the "death rattle" when turning car off. I guess it's just the nature of light fly wheel, carbon fiber driveshaft, and minimal dampening of the drivetrain for maximum weight saving. That translates for more noises heard and from my searches seems to happen on many performance cars. I've learned to live with it and find that if you rev it out past 3k in first and disengage clutch slowly and smoothly (don't just mash it) and re-engage the same it really minimizes it.

I had a 02 Lexus is300. Clunk/thump with the 5 speed manual was considered normal. 2013 370z 6sp manual no sound. The f80 doesn't make any sound either. Like others have said, is take it to the dealership and have it checked out.

Sounds like the normal "M clunk" to me, between first and second. Have it in my E46 and the F80, but it's nothing significant in my case. If you think it's something beyond the norm then take it in.
