She's gone

So my M car experience is now over. I traded my low mileage 2008 E90 in on a fully loaded CPO 2014 328d Xdrive. I have two Porsche's that I summer drive (Boxster and 911) and having the V8 M car as a daily didn't make sense. Plus I felt it was a bit sacrilegious to drive such a pristine low mileage example in the winter.

I really enjoyed the experience, and maybe I will return again!

I hope the new owner enjoys her as much as I did!

Cheers!

Ya I know...

The 3.6 in the 911 isn't as outright fast at the M3 but it has boatloads more midrange torque and fatter powerband. The M3 with a manual takes practice to perfect driving technique for sure, but rewarding once you get it right.

That's rough. I can't see a reason to keep the 996 over the m3 unless it was your father's. I'm sure you'll be back soon.

Sucks to hear, but I feel you on that. 328d should fulfill all your daily needs, though!

Tough crowd. Flame suit on

I agree that from a performance, utilitarian and comfort aspect the M3 was superior to the 911. I have owned two E90 328i's, the E90 M3 and the F30 328d. It staggers me how different the driving dynamics are on the M3 from the standard car it is based from. If my M3 was a higher miler, and not such a pristine example I may have looked at things differently. My wife and I both commute to for work, and where she parks is a dirty manufacturing plant. It pained me to have her take the M to work and I was always being anal about it as a daily driver. The new 328 is perfect for this task, and sips fuel in comparison. I also found that once the Boxster and 911 were out of winter storage, on a nice day I would walk right past the M and take one of them. Seems like more of an "event" to take the Porsche out. So where does this leave my M? A car to take out on not nice days and drive in the winter? It deserved better than that. I was going to sell the Boxster too (its a 99 2.5) but it is so much fun, and handles so good I just kept it. I have less invested in the 911 and the Boxster than what the M was worth.

So there you have it. Maybe doesn't make sense to some here but for our situation it did. When I did the run down of our vehicles, the one that made the most sense to go was the M3. It wasn't that I couldn't afford to keep it. And I definitely am not saying the 911 or the Boxster are better cars. But I will say they are both more fun cars to drive on those nice days.

Yeah, I mean, it's your money and choice, and when you post something like this, then you'll get a lot of hate and questions about your judgement. I initially thought you had something like a Turbo, GT3 or GTS, which makes some sense...It just seems like upkeep wise, the M3 would have been cheaper than a 996 and the old boxster.

IMO, there's nothing valuable about that 996...I wouldn't touch it even if it was given to me. The 328d is cool tho.

neither. Based on the looks of the body, it's either a C2 or C2S.

You literally said everything on my mind. A non-S, non GT3/2/TT 996 has zero, and I mean ZERO, above an E9X M3 except the badge. It's literally an inferior car in every single way.

At that point why not sell the 996 Cab or Boxster? Both are two seat weekend convertibles, there is so much overlap there. If I was in OP's shoes I would've kept the M3, sold one of the 996/Boxster and bought a daily like a E90 328Xi - but I know better.

Anyways, enjoy the new F30!

I'm 99% certain that's just a 996 C2 Cab... No red callipers = usually not an S.

The e90 M3 is easy to sell and he may get more to put down on a newer F30.

The 996 Cab non S is worth less than the value of the M3 and it's obviously on Buyer's market... He might want to drive it till it dead or leave it to his son/ daugther.

I love my M3, but if I had a 911 along with the M3 and had to sell one, I'd keep the Porsche.

I think some are discounting the 996 a bit too much (mine is a C2). Its 320 hp, but even in a cabrio it's 500 lbs lighter than a loaded up M3. In a drag race the manual M3 would win IF driven perfectly but one slip and the 911 would take it. Its tough to make a mistake in the 911 with the rear engine however I think a DCT M3 would smoke it. In handling, the M3 is better overall, but less nimble. They have their reliability scares (ims bearing, bore scoring etc.) but its like the M3 with rod bearings, it really affects a pretty small number of cars. For maintenance, believe it or not the Porsche's are cheaper to maintain. BMW puts their huge M tax on the parts for the E90 M3.

I have two little kids so in the 911, they can come with us. As for the Boxster, I will get so little for it on a sale I just keep it for fun, and the maintenance on it is completely up to date. Also my wife can drive it to her work and get it dirty and I really don't care, lol.

I did well on the M3, once I factored in the tax savings by trading it in, it was like getting $35k cdn for it, which is close to what I paid for it last year. Also the dealer was motivated to sell the 328d and discounted it plus threw in the CPO for almost nothing. When the dust settled it was pretty close to an even trade.
