Dct question

Hi, coming from a 135 with dct. Thinking about a 2011 m3 sedan with mdct. Not sure if you guys are familiar with the dct issues on the 1 series. Basically, does the dct on the m3 hesitate, stall, delay, etc.? Or is the programming much better? Any direct comparisons would be greatly appreciated. Having 2 kids I need 4 doors and dct means the wife could drive, not sure if I want to go brand new or not. Thanks!

No issues at all with DCT on my 2009 E92. 70k miles. MDrive settings may contribute to some of the issues you mention, as there as many combos of throttle response and shift patterns available. You're probably used to that.

The DCT in the E9X M3 is just fantastic.

You can always load the GTS software to make it even better, but straight out of the box it is quite incredible. 11 modes will do that!

Never had an issue with the DCT and I think it matches this car perfectly. Get one before you can't!

I was under the impression that the 335is and M3 use the same DCT, it's just a difference in programming.

To answer your question, it's a fairly robust unit and I find it very easy to use around town. It's not as smooth as a traditional torque converter auto, but for 99% of people it will be fine.

M3 DCT acts a little lazy when the fluid is cold. But once warmed up it's awesome!

I have owned 2 E9X M3s, both with DCT.

I do not find them to hesitate, stall, or delay.

However, they do leak, seep, and weep DCT fluid at various points (most commonly, the plastic mechatronics seal on the bottom of the unit).

I recommend both a GTS Tune to make it perfect, and to also invest in the Viton Gaskets with Stainless Hardware to address the leak(s).

It's not as smooth as a traditional automatic or pdk, it jerks forward every now and then around town, and wot downshift is pretty laggy without using the pedals. GTS flash helps with some of the low speed jerkiness but don't expect silk smooth.

Any transmission is like that.

I had a 335is with DCT and it kind of "snatched" when taking off in 1st gear. It felt more similar to a normal automatic transmission and didn't "neutral out" and roll backwards on a hill like the DCT in my M3. I bet the DCT in your 135 is very similar to the one in my 335is - the M3 DCT is much nicer and the actual method of operation is quite a bit different.

DCT is very programmable, it can be lazy for mom and fast for daddy. It's a beauty!

Folks run the E9X platform with forced induction up to 600hp and above with little concern. I cannot speak on the 1 series DCT but the one in my E92 has 125,xxx and other than cracking my trans cover on a huge rock.....no issues. Even after replacing the pan, pump and both filters myself it's going strong. It is possible to confuse the DCT with retarded pedal input but very hard to do as the gearbox program seems to be pretty legit in my 3 year experience.
