Recommend a good summer performance tire
What are the options for a good Summer tire on a xLine 2015 X5 35i.
I read many conflicting reviews and @ 255/50/19 the selections are limited. I have winter tires , so I thought All Season would be unnecessary. Any assistance would be appreciated. |

all season will last longer than summer tires. and will be safer in wet weather.
i see no advantage to get summer tires over all seasons, with the 19" wheels. and with as mild as the winters have been lately, you could probably just run the all seasons year round. |

Contis DWS06s are tough to beat , especially on the 19" wheel.

You would be surprised at how well dunlops summers grip on wet roads... Actually a lot of the summer tires are great on wet roads. If you already have winter tires, then I would get summers since you will probably only use the summer from April through October and the rest of the time winters.

I'm using Dunlop Sport Maxx GT, 275/40/275 & 315/35/20, just got new ones, as the first set cupped so much that the singing got unbearable towards the end of their life. I got mine in Jan 2014 and driven 91000km. But also have Continental winter tires on for some months each year. The new Dunlop are very quiet. And I'm very pleased with them. A college u has Bridgestone Duelers and they seem to make just a tiny bit extra of tire noise. Both are brandnew.

I'm using the OEM Dunlop's described by Diper above. Despite it being RFT, I actually like how it handles at high speeds and it is very sticky. I've got 23K miles on them so far and could probably get another 4K out them. I already purchased a new set from Tirerack a week or so ago ready to replace them. If you prefer non run flats, I like the Conti Extreme Contact Sports.
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...Clar=M%20Sport The thing about DWS06 which I think are fantastic tires but they are a compromise of summer and winter tires.. All seasons are jack of all trades, master of none. You already have a winter tire, all you need now is summers if you want speed and agility along with increased responsiveness, cornering, and braking capabilities. Just my opinion though.

i hear a lot of guys who wreck that say "must have hit black ice" because they drive the summers when its cold out, combined with wet roads = a bit scary. plus the thread starter has 19" wheels. how much performance can you gain, with a tall sidewall? and running winter tires from october to april would really suck. my winter tires sound like i'm driving big truck tires down the road. i try to keep them on to a minimum. |

I am running the ExtremeContact™ Sport from Continental. This is recently released model. I have had them since May and am loving them. A true high performance summer tire.

Summer tires don't magically turn into plastic once it drops below 40 degrees. In fact, unless you always push the performance envelope when you drive, they're actually fine in lower temps as long as there isn't any moisture on the ground.
If you have them on and get hit with a surprise cold spell it's not the end of the world. Just do not take them out if there is any risk of snow or frozen water on the roads. They'll be manageable as long as it's dry. My issue with putting summer tires on the X5 would be due to their cost relative to their tread life. Since summer tires are generally made of softer rubber (with lower tread life expectations to match) and cost much more than all-seasons, I shudder to think how quickly a vehicle as heavy as the X5 would go through tires and how much it would cost to replace them. Figure at 15,000 miles a year with 8 months per year on summer rubber you'd get two years out of a set? That's about $800 per year in tires vs. something like $150 per year for all-seasons. |

I've driven my X5 with Dunlop RFT the past two winters in freezing temps without any trouble with grip... As long as I don't have to drive on top of snow or ice, I was fine.
Currently have 23K miles on them and will be replacing it with another set of Dunlops in the next few months.
