Oil level low light came on - which oil to buy?

Long story short, my car has 43,000 miles on it and I bought it about 3000 miles ago. My oil light came on. It is Sunday, and I can’t go to the dealership to get oil unfortunately, so I am forced to get oil from the auto parts store. I read on the post that BMW recommends 0w-30 or 5w-30 and some oil consumption is normal. I am going to monitor oil levels very closely because I am so anal with my cars. But what auto parts store brand and weight do you guys recommend? I know the oil cap says Castro synthetic but you guys have more BMW experience than me.

The gauge is really just a measurement of the last quart of oil. If that gauge was all the way down to the bottom, you would be one quart low. Just wait until tomorrow and get the right oil. You will be fine.

Look for any oil with the bmw LL-01 certification. Castrol 0w40 would be the most likely brand/weight at the typical auto parts store.

BMW moved away from Castrol as their provider a little way back. The oil cap on my 2015 M4 still says "BMW recommends Castrol" though .

While 5W30 is suitable, the preferred oil for the S55 is 0W40.

BMW switched to Shell for their OEM oil from Castrol. Also to meet EPA/CAFE standards, they are recommending BMW 0w-30 for their LL-01-FE certification.

The 0w-30 appears to be a robust oil. The base stock is sourced from Shell's gas-to-liquids Pearl plant in Qatar, which appears to have some pretty innovative technology behind it.

Interesting stuff for sure, but I am by no means an oil expert

If I am not mistaken, BMW switched their recomendation from 0W30 to 0W40 for ///M turbocharged engines when they switched from Castrol to Shell.

The owner's manual for my 2015 M4 calls for 0W30 as the primary recommendation with 5W30 as a suitable alternative. It also has the mention that "BMW recommends Castrol".

Later manuals call for 0W40.

I thought so too, but it looks like the M version 0w-40 is no longer available and has been superseded by other weights in the Twinpower lineup

Anything that meets BMW specs in manual should be fine. Don't overfill it.

Both will work. If you are looking for a 0w-40, Castrol. 0w-30, BMW OEM/Shell.
