Heated steering wheel icon?
Am I missing something? Is there not a status light or icon for heated steering wheel except for the little light next to the button?
I constantly have to tilt my head just to see if it's on... hmmmmmm

It comes on on a dash for a few seconds after turned on, and goes off. Why icon is not staying on dash is beyond me.

If your X5 is equipped with Head Up Display, then the bottom of the instruments are digital and can provide a lot of info (I learned this, on this awesome forum)
When I activate my heated steering wheel, the bottom on my Left Instruments (speedometer) momentarily shows the heated steering wheel icon, and says Steering Wheel Heat Activated. When I turn the wheel heating off, the bottom left instruments then tells me heat is deactivated. |

I can tell when it’s on because my steering wheel gets toasty warm. No need for a dash icon other than the one mentioned previously when it is first turned on or off.

How? My 2014 does nothing, my 2018 M3 does tell me briefly which is all I need.

I don’t think the 2014 ever showed it. I know for sure that the 16-18 show a message at the bottom of the dash saying when it is activated or deactivated. The message goes away in a few seconds.

Yeah, I've got a '15 with HUD. No indication. The only way to tell it is on is moving my head way down and to the side because it's hiding behind the paddle shifter. It is kind of irritating. It heats the steering wheel up enough that I only like to turn it on for a couple of minutes, then turn it off, otherwise it gets too warm. It's such a routine thing, sometimes I forget if I already turned it off or not and reflexively look down... but can't see it. Not a big deal, but then again, anything that can be operated by the driver should be able to be seen with some kind of indication or feedback, either by feel, or visual.

Has anyone been able to make this work on a pre-‘16 model? The above FDL does not exist in my BDC. I don’t understand why my ‘13 f30 had this but not an X5!

For sure - this works in my 2015 35d - it’s not a permanent dash indicator- as mentioned, it flashes a message indicating whether you’re turning the heated wheel to actived or deactivated, then disappears. I’d not mind having a small unobtrusive symbol on all the time heating is active but that’s just not what happens. This is better than no message or (convenient) indicator at all, and let’s face it, trying to look down at the left side of the steering column while driving is not a smart thing - really not sure why BMW bothered with the LED at the switch.

Having owned a ‘14 and now a ‘17, I can confirm.
2014 - no indication on cluster and button on steering column was all black 2017 - temporary activation/deactivation notification on cluster and button on steering column has steering wheel graphic. One of a dozen minor changes between the model years. |

I’m not expecting a permanent indicator at all. My f30 simply flashed a message that steering wheel heating was activated or deactivated then went away. I do have a light on my button that comes on, but I also wanted a visual cue in the cluster.
