No doubt this is a dumb question, but...

How possible do you think it is that I could tow a small sailboat behind the M3?

The entire set-up, boat and trailer weighs less than 1K lbs, and probably less than 900Lbs.

The dealer also said no, no chance, but I also suspect that they have no idea either.

I should also add that it will not be towed very far, or very often.

you should just strap the boat to the roof instead with a long rope going through the drivers side window and back out the passenger window. When you start driving fast reach you hand out the window to hold on to it to make sure it doesn't blow off. This technique usually works pretty good.

Is that what you would do?

the manual only says that the weight on the hitch must be considered when loading the car, ie, do not exceed maximum...

it has the power and gearing...the issue will be finding a hitch and hooking up the required lighting...

I did not even consider to look in the manual, thanks. I will go read it to see what else it says.

I had not considered the lighting either. I guess some investigation is required to figure out if that will work.

It should be possible. You would be amazed at the things I've seen people tow in Germany with a small car. They generally don't do pickup trucks there, so it's not unusual at all see hitches on small and high performance cars, as they use small utility trailers instead of pickups. Sorry I can't help you with any specific info as far as hitch installation, but I would think that 900 pounds would be no problem.

I was going to type exactly that...

I bet that there is a hitch kit in Europe for the E9x...

Now to find it, do we have members from Europe here?

For reference, here is the sailboat I have coming.

Seriously, buy a cheap 4x4 to tow your sailboat. It will also serve as a good winter vehicle too.

I can't see how you could attach a hitch without modifying the rear bumper bodywork.

I have friends that justified buying enormous tow vehicles just to drag two motorcycles or PWCs. I used to regularly tow two sportbikes on an open trailer with my 325i, no problems whatsoever.

The rear underside of this car is pretty crammed up with mufflers, what did E46 M3 people use? I'm interested.
