Bloody Indicators
So just got back from a round trip of 1500 miles to the Swiss Alps skiing for 10 glorious/snowy days.
Took the beast down fully loaded with 4 passengers, large roof box, and trunk full to the brim. The SUV drove effortless there and back through the French and Swiss highways with little effort bearing in mind the load. Smooth and very comfortable ride the 13 hours each way and surprisingly achieving 30mpg. The Hankook winter tyres performed well in the deep snow with no real problem. However one thing I have noticed that is particularly annoying whilst overtaking other vehicles, is the fact the indicator does not turn off without having to do it manually from the indicator stalk. Is this a common issue or am I required to visit the dealership? This problem only exists when overtaking as turning corners for example does turn the indicator off automatically. Cheers

I have yet to drive a car that doesn’t operate this way. I’m curious what cars you’ve driven that turn off the indicator after passing or Chang ng lanes if you’ve flipped them to full on.

if you just tap the stalk down or up it will flash 3x then shut off. if you engage the indicator it will not shut off until you disengage the indicator.

Your driving a BMW, why would you use a turn signal?

As others have said, a half push gives you just 3 blinks, a full push switches on. A half push the other way switches off again.

And, if you prefer five flashes instead of three when pushing the stalk half way, you can code it.

As everyone is saying...a light, gentle half push up or down will give you the perfect 3 blinks to pass. Push the turn stalk all the way down or up...and the blinker will stay on until you make your turn and the steering wheel returns to the neutral position, OR, you can just give it a gentle tap up and it will go off!

Thanks for your replies.
As everyone has said half tap was what I assumed but for some reason this does not work on mine - stays on and does not flash three times. I'll speak to the dealership.

You have to activate it from the settings menu, lights. Nobody reads the user's manual these days?

I thought there was a portion in the settings that allow you to adjust that... Not sure I remember correctly but I recall seeing that unless it was a different vehicle I had.

Indeed there is:
Triple turn signal activation Slightly tap lever. The turn signal flashes three times. The function can be activated or deactivated. On the Control Display: 1. "Settings" 2. "Lighting" 3. "Triple turn signal" Settings are stored for the profile currently used. Signaling briefly Press the lever to the resistance point and hold it there for as long as you want the turn signal to flash. Malfunction Unusually rapid flashing of the indicator lamp indicates that a turn signal bulb has failed. I am surprised that it wasn't activated from factory. I am quite sure i did not have to activate mine. |

My last 5-6 BMWs have come programmed with the 3 blink either from the factory, or the dealer did it during PDI. But yes, this is an option in iDrive! I totally forgot about it. It's funny, EVERY other car brand that has this...it is just a factory setting. Odd, that BMW makes it an option! My last few cars (non-BMW group) G550, Range Rover Bentley GT and 911S...the 3 blink was just there, no option to turn off.
