Ugly scratch

The very same day I posted about my one-year anniversary with the M3, I goofed up by not pulling far enough into my garage. The garage door had a small bolt head sticking out just far enough to put this hideous scratch in the rear bumper. It went all the way through the paint and even put a bit of a crease in the bumper plastic. Aarrgh!

Now researching the best way to fix it, so any suggestions are appreciated.

Either bite the bullet and repaint the bumper or use this carefully. The results are pretty good with your touch up paint.

Touch-up paint will make it less visible, but if the bumper is actually creased you will need to have that sanded, filled in, and resprayed.

I say start with touch-up paint (should take no more than 15-20 minutes) and see what you think.

Sorry to hear about this...I think we've all been there before in one shape or form. You can do the touch-up paint of course, but it will probably never look right....and the uneven surface will look more like a paint drip run.

So as the other poster mentioned, the best is to get the bumper resanded and sprayed. Depending on what zip code you are in, this should be <$900 hopefully.

If you're really OCD, you'll probably want to have it resprayed.

I actually have the exact same scratch (Interlagos as well) in the exact same location - the original owner touched it up, and it surprisingly doesn't bother me given I'm pretty OCD.

Sorry to see OP. The paint looks to be really thick(!), filler and respray from what I can see.

repaint. touch up will look ok from 10ft, and terrible from 3ft. hopefully up north your rates arent like ours down here, that would be a $1000 job easily at my shop.

Take it to a local detailer and have them fill and wet sand the scratches if you don't want to DIY. Best of luck!

Oh man, that's the worst feeling. I've done the same thing many times. I wonder if a body shop could just fix that spot and blend it without doing the whole bumper cover?

Wife did something similar with our E39 M5. Ended up respraying the bumper.

Its possible to do this, but we only do this type of repair on beater civics and corollas, i would never offer this for an m3.

Definitely a respray. Don't sweat it Everytime I need to get a panel painted I think about all the other imperfections that are being fixed as well as part of the paint job. Shouldn't be too much cash ~700 I would guess.

You can remove the bumper yourself which will bring your labor cost down to about 200$, that's what I did.

I did the same thing to my 08. Luckily it was black and I used a sharpie.

Wouldn't worry about a respray tho. Dealers respray bumpers all the time before selling cars.

I ordered up some Interlagos Blue touch up paint and primer. Think I'll haver a go at repairing it myself. If I make it worse, I'll just pull it off and get someone else to do it.

This! I did the same thing (trunk) with my garage door; left it that way for over a month considering what it would cost to get it redone. Finally called my insurance, took it to a body shop, and paid the deductible. Call your insurance; it's small things like this that you pay them for.

Kite string and a tennis ball works wonders.

Even so, our E300 has the exact same line from the garage door.
