Am I crazy?!? E90 for 911 S/4S
I've had serious thoughts recently with selling my E90, that I absolutely love and lust over every time it's in my sights! I can't even believe the thought is there but with 997.2 prices starting to climb now the Porsche has gone to turbos, I fear they may become unobtainable. I constantly check the market for s few different cars I have always wanted just to watch trends, it's one of my passions. It's why I jumped into this market as I saw the E90, specifically with ZCP, will be a car to keep and enjoy but yet still use daily without issues or feeling uncomfortable. It took me 5 weeks of searching daily to find this extremely rare E90, it turns out it's 1 of only 16 optioned the way it is with Interlagos Blue. I've taken this car and thrown tons of money into it and the warranty has paid over9k in it as well. It goes without saying the car needs absolutely nothing. However, recently I obtained a hand me down 07 Volvo S60 for daily use and it's kinda pushed this thought into my head. I feel I'd eventually regret selling my E90 but with the prices of the cars I want in the color combos I want fetching more and more I don't think I could justify the cost in a year or two, considering what else you'll be able to buy for similar money. To make this situation even happen I'd also have to fetch serious money for my car. I know it'll be tough but given the rarity and condition of the car, this won't be one that sells at a lower number. No it hasn't had bearings done or TAs but the warranty will go with it which will cover both if/when that happens. To throw a wrench in my plan, my wife and I are also planning on trying for kids in the next few months. She doesn't like the idea of a 911 but with the Volvo and her car, it's a wash in that department.
So what's everyone's thoughts here? I know they're different levels of cars but someone out there has gone from a 911 to E90/E92 or vise versa. What do me bimmer guys think about this?!?

You are trying for kids. You need a 4 door sports car if you intend to use it with the fam. Otherwise I am totally on board replacing an M3 with a 911. I will be doing that in the next two years (not replacing but adding to the stable).

I drove a couple of 997 cars before I set foot in my e92. I ended up with the BMW.
I would recommend you spend some time in a 997 or two. I wasn't all that impressed with the carreras I drove. I'd probably want a GTS or higher, if I could afford one. |

It really depends on whether the car will be needed for the family. If the Porsche is just going to be your toy and you have a family car I see no issue. I have 3 cars, and SUV an E46 M and E92 M. Never have the car seats gone in the M’s. The SUV is our family car and have never had a need for a second. But on the flip side you already have a beautiful M that would work with a family so I would vote keep the M.

I would never sell that car!
I searched for years for a low mileage, manual, blue E92, so I would have a hard time giving it up and with yours being that rare I could not see giving it up!

The E90 and a Volvo would make for a great combo, even if Kids will arrive sometime within the next 1-2 years. Keep the E90 as a toy and backup car - that's what I would most likely do. It would also keep you from "losing" all the money you had spent on the car.
On the other hand, I understand the search for a manual, naturally aspirated 911 (997.2 or even 991.1) - have looked at those before as well. They hold their value very well (at the moment at least) and with Porsche shifting to Turbos after 991.2 these could become collectibles very soon. However, as it was mentioned, a plain 911 C2 would not be sought after so much. You would need to get a GTS, Targa4S or similar I would imagine... It's a tricky question indeed. |

Thanks for everyone's input. Im looking at a Carrera S, 4S or GTS as a replacement. I have this mental illness that the entry level car isn't for me
I love the E90 in every way. Its rewarding and does everything a daily should while providing that sports car feel when needed. I do plan on going to test drive a few 911s in the correct trim this coming week to see how it feels. My fear is Ill love it so much Ill move to quickly haha Im like a child when shopping for cars. A coworker has a Boxster S, 2010, and that car is a blast. Im not a vert guy but the car is very rewarding, the sound, shifter feel and how nimble it feels. He's a P-car enthusiast so it doesn't help having him in my ear all day.

I went from e90 M3 to 997.2S. It is night and day difference in terms of driving and I would not sell it for 1 car. However, due to its impracticality will family, I am looking to add e90 M3 to the stable and keep the 997.2S as weekend car

In my mind, the natural progression for me is a P car as well. None of these newer BMWs interest me (M2 maybe).
I considered Boxsters and Caymans when I was looking for M3s. But I needed back seats. Simply because where ever I go with my wife and kid, I want to drive. I think you have a great example of this car and you should stick with it. |

If you have your heart set on owning a 911, I would say go for it. You can always come back into an E9X later on since the prices of these won't be increasing anytime soon nor with they climb as fast as 911s.

Depends on your budget and whether practicality matters or not. FWIW if I didn't need backseats I'd go drive a few flavors of 911, Cayman, Elise, Exige, and probably a Shelby GT350 as a curve ball then buy the one I liked the most. The e9x is mega, but you've been there and done that so why not try something else. Also if you want to get another e9x later there are loads of them available.

If the M3 was your only car I would say to keep it. But you have 2 other cars that will serve duty as family haulers and you don't need 3. I would go for the 911 in a heartbeat. As much as I love the M3, the Porsche is a better car in every way that matters to an enthusiast.

I'd get rid of my car yesterday to hop in a P car. The issue for me is that the one I want is more than double what my E90 is worth! I'd like a 993 C2S, but at their price points (one just sold with my spec on BaT for $77k), I feel that you're reaching too far into 997 GT3 territory to not consider one of those.
As can be seen with the many discussions we've all had on here, there really isn't anything out there with the same feeling at the price point these things are at. And with a 4-door variant, I'd say that you've got the best example. Another thing to consider is that I don't really see these cars steadying on value or appreciating for some time. The P-car will hold strong and probably do nothing but go up from here (as you've already seen). If you owe on the E90 I feel that you'll be chasing equity for a while. |

Buy the Porsche you want. You have 2 family cars and don’t need a 3rd. Plus, a rear facing baby seat won’t fit the back of an E90 unless you are short and your seat is far forward. Or your wife is short and you have just one kid in a baby seat at a time.
I’d like to get a used 991TT but keep my 08 E90 M3 as a beater. It’s still a decent car and is reasonable practical. I can fit some 10’ lumber in it. |

E90 as a second car.
911 as a third car. If you're keeping the Volvo and another car, may as well swap M3 for a 911. Clean car, it will sell easily. That said, I think pricing for clean E90s is now flat, while I doubt base 997.2s will continue their upward trend. |
