F10 M5 knob help

Got my f10 M5 knob and started the swap yesterday. I not have the m5 boot on the M3 ring, but just held by clips and I already glued a few spots (using shoo gloo at another members advice because it is reversible). Im just worried about cutting too much material off. As I have it now, I have the end of the boot just past the base of the ring. I see that some people make slits for the tabs, but wasn't sure if this is necessary. I just dont want to get to a point where I take off too much material and then it is ruined.

Also where are the best spots to cut the knob and pull it together to make it fit. All of this is hard to explain without pictures, but I will post some pictures when I get home later. Any advice to get the boot to fit better would be much appreciated.

I did this - cut off more material than required.

Pros - fits snugly and looks clean.

Cons - Pops out sometimes - once a month. But it will gradually become easier to pop it back in as the leather gets massaged and takes the shape of the edges.

Used gorilla glue to stick it and didn't pull the leather over the clips - added too much thickness which was becoming a pain to put back in the gear slot.

Interesting. I would just rather leave too much than cut away too much. That way if I want to tighten up the leather after a while, I can.

I guess I just need to trust my judgment a little more.

Oh definitely - it's all about judgement in the end.

Just pointing out that cutting out too much won't be the end - you will be able to use it still.

All the best,

When I did mine, I compared my excess slack with some pics and vids from the main thread on this topic. You’ll notice the right spot is where it just barely starts to feel snug on the ring. I also took the time to clean off all of the old residue and press the leather firmly all the way around and I had no trouble getting the ring to clip back into place.

IND will craft an OEM fit setup with the F10 knob and m stitched alcantara boot cut and glued to the e90x base for a perfect plug and play solution. Not cheap but in my option worth the perfection and less the time and frustration with dyi. Just received mine on Sat, installing soon.

I cut off about 1/4" all around. Fits great! Hope this helps.

This is how much "slack" I had:

This is how much material I removed:

Update:

Wasn't able to finish gluing yesterday. I got about halfway. However, I was actually able to pop in the shifter and drive around. I might keep it like this for a few weeks until I figure out how much material I want to take off. It actually looks pretty good the way I have it, but im sure over time I will want it to have less slack. Ill have some pics later hopefully.

Update: here are some pics of how it looks. Like I said, only about half is glue and I just tucked the leather in the rest of the way. Actually doesnt look too bad, but I will alter it over time as I figure out how much material I want to take off. Sorry about the blurry pictures. My Iphone camera focus is beyond broken.

It's not posted on the website cause it's more of a custom order. Just call IND and ask for Cat. She'll take care of you.
