How to code the key fob to close the tailgate (2018 X5)

I live in Maryland, US. Recently, I bought a new X5 (2018). As you know, the key fob is unable to close the tailgate by default. I really want to make this work.

Googled quite a bit and searched on the youtube, but I am unable to find the complete steps of coding the key fob to close the tailgate. I also went to and searched at https://www.bmwusa.com/owners-manuals.html. Unable to find the answer.

Can anyone point me to the right place for the step-by-step instructions? Or post the how-to here if it is a few simple steps? I am a new user, and this is my first BMW.

Thank YOU!

Did you try this?

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...SnMXo/htmlview

You have to hold the button down for about 2 seconds. Did you try that?

Thanks so much for the link. Read it, but I don't understand the terms and values there. Nor do I know how to find them on X5.

Regarding the "2 seconds", do you have the detailed steps of doing it?

Many thanks!

Thanks for helping me!

I searched this forum for "coding" and got a lot of results. Read a few and felt lost. Are you aware of any link/method that lists the steps without me having to buy an device first?

No. Holding down the trunk key for 2-3 seconds cannot close the tailgate. Based on my research, it is purposely disabled by the factory.

Yes. I bought my X5 last September. Have been thinking about getting this to work. Today, researched, tried, and confused. Hope to find just a few steps to get this done without buying additional device.

It works after you code it!

Anyways there are different options for you.

1. Buy an enet cable, downloaded e-sys and latest PSDZ data files watch many you tube videos and experiment.

2. Buy an enet cable and pay someone to remotely code.

2. There are more simpler options available. These ODB bluetooth dongles that connect to your smart phone and do all the heavy lifting. I have no experience with these.

Am I right that all the options you listed require me to buy something first before coding/programming the key fob? If true, too bad. Don't know why it is so complicated for an obvious feature which is available on so many other cars without spending a dime.

You can ask your dealer to program it.

Thanks for your info!

Does a dealer offer this for free? I don't plan to do anything else on my X5. The feature in question is really something I want because I have it on my other cars and it is so convenient.

If it's a recent purchase, they usually allow a list of programmable features for free 😇

Do this.

If this is too complicated try to find a friend to do it for you.

The 30 bucks is costs is WORTH not having to go to the dealer.

This is what most of us do 😜 but you'll still need to ~ $50 😜

I would be highly surprised if any U.S. BMW Center would be willing to program the close by remote feature in. It is turned off for a specific reason.
