2014 X5 Fully Loaded M-Sport F15 but...

I’m seriously considering doing something I never thought I would. I found a fully loaded M-Sport F15 50i with 102k miles. I’ll put $2k in paint repair and a new M-Sport steering wheel.

Got quoted $4k for a 75k mile Warranty.

The Porsche Dealer is asking $25k with all service records, dealer service and new tires. I’m going to offer $22k cash

Any thoughts? I’m thinking of going-in with no warranty.

That car will probably get 8,000 miles over the next year.

What are some watch outs and common problems? Obviously the $4k warranty is worth it the moment a tranny goes. So let’s throw that into the proposition. That would put me at $29k for the Car with full warranty, new 2019 steering wheel (which looks Money) and the paint job.

I drove the car yesterday. It was smooth, the previous owner traded it for a Cayenne Turbo and the dealer won’t sell a POS based on their reputation. Only thing I see is the wear on the steering wheel and leather driver headrest.

As long as service records are up-to date and oil changes were done regularly your fine.

You will never claim the value of what you spend. These cars rarely have catastrophic failures like older cars did.

I never purchased an extended warranty in my life and own very high end BMW's.

I just talked to a Dinan Certified Bimmer Shop that was recommended to me. I’m having them run a diagnostic on this 50i, if the health report comes out Clean, I’m buying this Bad Boy and surprising my wife. That’s one helluv a upgrade from a Volvo XC60!

Is that Porsche giving warranty for extra 75k miles on top of current 102k miles? What is excluded in that warranty? I would read that warranty footprints with a loop magnifier - just because if someone is giving a warranty on BMW up to 177k miles - that's interesting. If coverage is good - I would buy it for $4k considering it gives you extra 75k miles warranty.

As for x5 itself IMHO nothing is wrong with f15 generation (3rd gen) - they are pretty solid. You'll definitely need to change all fluids, filters (including ZF transmission and differentials). Check in service records when were things like coolant, rotors, spark plugs, coils, and ZF transmission changed (if they ever were). Do a good PPI and go from there.
Not much common known issues: control arms squeak occasionally (require changing more often), steering wheel tilt/zoom servo motor might stop working, iDrive occasional glitches and rear airbag suspension might require change every 50-70k miles (airbags might leak). These are common issues (like maybe every 1 out of 10 x5 will get them, some issues like control arms are more common than others), but it doesn't mean every x5 f15 will get them. Most probably you might get 1 or 2 within the lifespan of your vehicle.
50i has n63tu engine - which is surprisingly free (knock on the wood) of issues it's predecessor had (valve leaks and excessive oil consumption). Realistically if anything you have more chances to encounter gasket leaks as car ages rather then some issues with valves or else in 50i engine. No issues with turbines either.
So just approach it systemically, do homework, do PPI, don't rush and you'll be fine.

2014 50i engine at 102k miles. I wouldn't touch that with a 100 ft pole. 35i maybe. Didn't the 14 and even 15 50i have engine flaws?

Is this a part of a big dealership? Can the Porsche dealer get you a deal from a partner BMW dealership on oem warranty?

If they were a good deal, how does the warranty company make money? It's like Vegas, the odds are heavily in their favor.

What engine flaws in 14-15 model years are we talking about?

Great Info! The dealership hasn’t given me a Warranry quote but I checked with www.endurancedirect.com

My 2014 F15 X5 50i Msport has 65k miles currently. I bought it off my lease in 2017 because I liked it so much. Only issues have been:
1) Oil burner - not as bad as my 2012 50i, but still gets thirsty every few thousand miles in between oil changes
2) Air bladders in multicontour seats had to be replaced
3) I am taking it in tomorrow because my self-leveling rear air suspension (part of 3rd row package) has been freezing up in recent subzero temps

Other than that it has been trouble free, as was my prior E70. At that price you cant go wrong!

I forget the details but when I was researching the 50i, it was warning after warning regarding LONG term purchase. At this guys miles (over 100k) - that seems to be dicey but I'm also a guy who likes to buy cars with 25k or less.

I would express the same concern as N63 engine had quite a few issues. Your car may be just fine but the risks are higher.

Forget about the possible (probable) engine and trans problems for a second and consider this;

When I met my wife, she had a 325i with 70k miles. The car was great. By the time that car hit 120k, the windows no longer went up and down, the interior trim was falling off the doors, the seats were starting to split, the armrest leather had cracked, the sunroof wouldn’t open, unsolvable oil leaks, 2 water pumps and thermostats, and finally, the trans started doing something strange. Ended up selling the car for $1000.

So how many miles are you expecting to put on this X5 that already has 100k? $25,000 is a lot of cash. A lot of folks don’t have that kind of money laying around. I do, but I definitely wouldn’t spend it in the fashion that you’re considering. So you either A) are extremely wealthy (then why buy an old X5), or B) you recently inherited this cash and are looking to spend it. Which is it?
