My car-related wish for Black Friday is that none of my cars come within 10 miles of any gathering of Black Friday shoppers.

I want to:
1. Finally replace cracked windshield lol. 2. Tint front windows, something not too dark like 35% or so 3. Try to detail my car with some good product before winter comes 4. Buy a narrow carseat for 4yo, so that 2 adults can fit on rear seat together with car seat (my current old carseat is too wide and middle person has to sit sideways lol). |

Removing crappy CAI and restoring stock air box on my E46 M3. Should give me less heat soak and a little less noise.

For example you are doing a highway pass on full throttle, engine will work on highest torque, and if God forbid you'll get a misfire or bad injector during that moment - it could be enough to bend rod or scorch cylinder and then your engine is basically done. Warranty will not cover it (they can see it was flashed and besides n63tu DMEs contain separate independent memory modules that record highest torque, speed, boost etc (and no, they can't be erased via OBD reflash or ISTA/INPA etc), so dealership will see it when it comes to warranty claim). Out of warranty price for n63tu is $30.5k and about $12k labor. Then you will be looking for used engines on ebay for $9k that are a crapshoot to begin with and indy shops that will 99% mess things up during swap. You are entering the world of pain my friend. Just use it with caution, all I'm saying |

s63tu and n63tu share some parts, including rods and pistons. So n63tu also has forged rods, but both n63tu and s63tu bend rods at about 700 torque. Forged rods doesn't mean they are strong, you need to have special design forged rods to push it really. If you compare stock forged rod for s63tu with some proper forged rod - picture is worth thousands words (2nd pic attached). Stock forged rods are weak. Getting a flash and pushing it to 700 on highway doesn't mean you will bend rods right away, but it will be a matter of when, not if. All flashes for n63tu have high 600 torque numbers, even Stage 1. It doesn't matter BM3, ESS or else. At that torque numbers - any hiccup can be a last straw that will give your engine kaput. Very expensive one. And don't think that knock sensor and implemented safety that dials ignition back when knock is sensed will save you 100%. it will not. At high rpm if God forbid something happens that failsafe won't be quick enough to save your rod, piston or cylinder. If one wants to safely push power and experiment with tunes - you need either build engine (at the very least sleeves, forged rods, pistons) or consider different car altogether. x5 50i while powerful is NOT a reliable or strong engine to do this kind of things. If it's a mild tune and one keeps maintenance and requirements top notch (spark plugs, coils, fuel requirements etc) it should be fine for occasional usage. Otherwise it's a recipe for failure. Just remember every time you do full throttle and torque numbers go up high with whatever tune/flash you have - you are on borrowed time and walking on razor edge. Yes, you might impress couple guys on highway, but is it worth it to get into major headache if something goes wrong? If you have extra $40k or willing to risk warranty battle with BMW NA - go ahead, but the field engineer who will come to inspect your failed engine and DMEs will find out the reason quickly. And yes, I'm aware what some tuners are saying that they developed miracle way to avoid detection. IMHO it's so far from truth and just a marketing trick to get more tune sales. Bottom line is anyone doing it should be prepared for consequences. AFAIK s63tu2 has finally beefed up rods. That's the engine that goes into F90 M5. That engine can push safely more than 700 torque, but not our engines unfortunately. |
