Brake pad issue!
Hello all. I had a strange rock-type noise coming from the rear end, so I pulled the passenger left tire off and look what I found:
Is this something I need to worry about? Only about 5 mm of the edge of the pad seems to have be taken off....must have been some damn tough rock!

I'm not sure of your level of mechanical prowess, however, I would pull the caliper off and look at the surface of the brake pads in order to get a full assessment of the damage. I would also request your local dealer to ship you a new set of pad for that wheel.
Does it look like the rotor or hub are damaged?

Thanks for the reply. I'll be pulling the caliper off this week to check for any damage to the pad.
The rotor and hub look good, but I'll have my mech give me a proper opinion.

Probably completely normal. Pads are often chamfered at their edges from the factory. Chamfers reduce brake noise by reducing the pads tendency to chatter with a sharp 90 degree leading edge.

Best if I pull the other side too, just to see what it looks like.

I couldn't tell what was wrong from the picture but if it is the chamfer at the edge you're talking about then yes, it's normal. I've had a number of different pads that are shaped like that.

Excellent! I was talking about the chaffing on the edge....I should have been more specific, my fault.
It just looked a little too much like a chunk came off of it. I'll confirm with the driver's side in a few days when I get a chance to pull the wheel off.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? i'm getting a rock-type noise too.. Just started hearing it this evening... not sure if it's related.. but to me it sounded like it was coming from behind the rotor.. more like where the axcel comes into the rotor.

No, I have not. Just seems like a messed up rock placement. Pad is normal on the other side, but no issues with respect to abnormal pad wear on the side in question. Simply put, there is (was) a pad ""break down issue""" but it has gone no further.
Since I checked the wheels and the whole area of the brake pads, there are no further rocks adn the car is back to normal.
