Sqeaky Brakes!!!!!!!!!!!
Can someone tell me what causes the brakes to squeak when you first take the car out in the morning? This has only just appeared since the winter has set in
I've done 32k miles from new and I'm hoping I don't needs new pads and discs already. Be interested to find out. Winter shoes going on tomorrow so will have a look at the brakes more closely when the wheels are off. Cheers

Funny.
Never had a problem until moving to Michigan from Florida. Now first thing coming out of the garage the rears squeak. Goes away after braking a few times when driving. 30,000 miles so will have dealer look at. |

Thanks for the response Picasso.
Hope its not going to be an expensive fix when it goes in for its service early next year. I know its difficult to say due to driving habits but what is the average mileage you would get out of a set of pads and disks?

If it goes away after braking initially then it is likely the film as mentioned above. However, if it continues you can remove the pads and reapply caliper grease to the back plate, also to the carrier guides on the caliper itself. While not advised in a closed space you may also take a compressor and blow out the dust from the calipers while the pads are out (wear glasses and a mask). You'll be surprised at the amount of gunk that falls out.
"Bad" rotors and pads are denoted by the remaining depth, if yours still show good then try the above.

Mine do the same. I love that the dealer says it's normal...if that is the case, let's go get in a brand new vehicle and replicate the "normal" squeaking sounds.

Do you know what the actual SIB number is? Perhaps I've missed it, but I see your invoice says "per SIB", but does not reference the number. |

Assuming SIB isn't going to help anyone out of warranty, the only thing I see in the service work posted above that you could do yourself without replacing rotors/pads, is pull the pads and apply a good brake paste to the back of the pads. That's standard-operating procedure for any brake job, but perhaps with years/age re-application can help. That being said, my new-to-me 2015 X5 didn't have any brake squeal the first couple months I had it when it was mostly dry weather, but with recent rain the rear brakes squeal in the morning like most here...goes away after a few brake applications.
