Am I missing out on EDC?

Hi all,

Recently picked up a 2016 M4 6MT, Black Sapphire with Golden Brown Extended Leather. Love the car so far, but it does not have EDC or Driver Assistance Package. It was hard enough to find a 6MT with Brown Leather with low miles in my area at a decent price and clean carfax...

Anyways am I really missing out on not having EDC? I plan on putting coilovers on sometime in the spring as the stock suspension feels a bit boaty to me. I've seen that most coilovers for the M4 come EDC ready, but I've also seen loads of threads of people getting rid of EDC.

Would it be feasible/worth it to attempt to retrofit EDC into my car? I've seen the module on ebay for ~$400 or so but I'm sure you would have to run the wires for it unless the car was pre-wired for it, plus coding, etc. I'm coming from an E46 328i so i'm not really familiar with the F8x chassis and how things can be coded, retrofitted, etc.

I personally don't have EDC on my F82. I've driven in friends cars that do have it.

Maybe slightly more comfortable in comfort mode, but I never drive in comfort anyway. So that is/was never an issue for me.

I'm currently on a set of KW coilovers and it's absolutely perfect.

If I was in your shoes, I wouldn't try to do any retrofits.

No. If you want the car the way you want it you would have had to buy it new. It is cost prohibitive to retrofit almost anything on this car, particularly anything that involves electronics, which is almost everything.

If you install coilovers, you can theoretically tune the suspension to have the car drive and handle exactly the way you want, so you wouldn't be missing anything in that regard. What you would be missing is the ability to adjust the suspension dynamically based on the road surface. I drive my car most of the time in Sport/Sport+/Comfort, but on the freeway, I set it to Efficient/Comfort/Comfort so that it's more comfortable cruising.

P.S. I should have mentioned that I have Dinan "coilovers" which are actually just HAS, like the M Performance ones, along with Ground Control Camber Plates and an agressive camber setting. My ride is definitely not stock, so all modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport+) each went up a notch.

I would not retrofit anything on the car except a backup camera if your car does not come with it. There is too much electronics on the car and it's pretty complicated.

The standard suspension is between Sport and Sport+ on a car with Adaptive Suspension in terms of ride comfort.

Only thing you would really lack is being able to switch on the fly to a comfort riding car to a racecar riding car. But also, the car does calculations and will adjust the suspension based off different measurements the car gives. If you want to tune the car's suspension yourself, I wouldn't bother with EDC at all.

I have EDC on mine and wouldn't buy one without for my usage. Comfort for the family and ability to go Sport+ for me when I'd like to. Big difference in comfort between the two.

That being said I think you answered your own question about coilovers. Almost never worth it money wise to retrofit an option on a BMW; has to be because you absolutely want it and then most times it's cheaper to sell and find a car with it.

I agree here. On KW V3’s and I’m very happy with the ride (not too soft not too harsh).

OP, this is the perfect opportunity to buy this DSC Sport controller:

https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1623978

Seller also has a set of EDC shocks with the wiring that you can tap into. It'll be the most cost effective approach to EDC integration, and although it won't be OEM controls using the center console button, from my understanding, this controller is way better than stock settings anyways. I'm sure the seller could walk you through how to use it.

I didnt realize BMW kept playing games, EDC used to be always standard. Only found out it was an option when searching this year, surprised how many F8X's didnt have it. I hope it just goes back on as standard option. Was also shocked EDC is not available on M2 or M2C, only the M2CSL. For me its a must, one salesman tried to convince me it wasn't a big deal and necessary for me, I was like you have no idea who you are talking to.

But now they are playing games with the M xDrive and variations, at least on the M550.

EDC is nice to have, but it won't cure your observation of a "boaty" feeling. It's still like that with EDC. MP HAS with updated EDC coding is really what makes EDC shine.

EDC, known officially as "M Adaptive Suspension", was an option through MY 2016, but became standard in MY 2017. I had to order it as an option on my 2016 M4, but it was part of the standard equipment on my wife's 2018 M3 CP.

The thread ntg44 linked is the business. DSC sport controllers work some magic on adaptive suspensions. The p-car track times don't lie stock PASM vs DSC sport PASM. I haven't seen the results on an F8X yet.

Had passive suspension in my first F80 and now have adaptive suspension in my current F80. Really don’t notice a difference between the modes expect for harshness but I must say the car feels much more composed while in comfort mode during everyday driving.

My first F80 (2015) was quite floaty at all times and required a lot of confidence in certain situations...for example when hitting bumps mid corner. My current F80 (2018) feels much more confidence inspiring in all modes. It just gets stiffer with changing from comfort to sport and sport to sport plus. Not sure if this is due to EDC or not but I do enjoy the feel much more.

Regardless, enjoy the car!

There's also the difference between 2016 and up models with Competition Package and earlier models without the Competition Package. My wife's 2018 M3 with ZCP is much more composed in any mode than my 2016 non-ZCP M4. Her suspension set to Comfort is firmer than mine was (before my HAS and camber plates).
