Correct Oil for F82
Hey guys,
I just sold my E92 335i 6mt for a DCT F82 M4. Not sure when the last time the oil was changed, so i'd like to do so. From my research, i see that 0w-30 and 5w-30 are correct oils. I also see some people using 5w-40. Since i'm stock, what oil should i use? (Car has 40k miles) Any specifc oil kits you buy off of FCP Euro, ECS, or TMS? OEM BMW, Liqui-Moly, or Motul?

Synthetic is mostly all the same. just slightly different flash points. So, It really doesn’t make a difference what brand you use if you’re changing before 7-10k For the f80 use 0-30 or 0-40. Not sure why ppl are using 5-40 unless the engine has some form of oil loss or deal with high heat climates. Personally I used castrol 0w-40. Dig more on the topic here and you will find more. Loaded subject.

If you're in a warm climate I recommend 5w30.
Pennzoil platinum euro synthetic is what I recommend. Pennzoil is the OEM supplier of oil for this generation of vehicle. It's goes on sale regularly and Pennzoil has rebate coupons on their site. |

BMW LL-01 or LL-01FE are the correct approvals to use. Not many options outside of OEM which carry one of these approvals.
However if approval is not that important to you, I recommend Castrol 0w40 as another poster mentioned. It can be found basically anywhere and carries the approval from every major German manufacturer (sans BMW as of recent). |

I had not seen that Castrol 0w40 "lost" its LL01 spec till now. Oh well since its a "violation" now anyway, maybe I will consider M1 0w40 again. 2 new jugs of castrol in the garage to use first tho.

BMW has literally been all over the map on oil weight recommendations for this car. They used to have an M-specific oil, BMW "M Twin Power Turbo SAE 0W-40, which had an ///M logo on the bottle but went to a generic BMW oil around 2017, IIRC.
The PDF version of my manual (2016) specifies 0W-30 and alternately, 0W-40. I can't put my hands on the paper manual right now, but I remember that it had a different spec, possibly 5W-30, which seems likely because I have a sticker under my hood (top left center when the hood is opened) that has "5W-30", along with an oil can icon, an "information" icon (lower case "i" in an open book) and a QR code. My phone can't seem to read the QR code. If you have this sticker, I would go by that spec. It's important that regardless of the weight, that the oil meets the BMW Longlife-01 or BMW Longlife-01 FE specifications. I've been using the BMW "Twin Power Turbo" SAE 0W-30, LL-01 FE, because that's what getbmwparts.com supplies in their oil change kits for the S55. They've told me that this oil replaces the 5W-30 spec. My car is still under warranty, so I'm using BMW oil and their spec. I've read that Mobil 1 doesn't meet the LL-01 spec, but that may have changed.

BMW 0w30 is the correct factory oil, made by Shell. Fun fact it's made from natural gas. Or any oil that has the BMW LL-01FE approval.

My vote is for the OEM 0W40 oil.
I'm fairly certain this was the recommended weight in my '15 F80 owner's manual. I am HUGELY skeptical of the move to the non M 5w30 oil. It smacks of simplifying dealer workflow and getting some cost savings on the free maintenance plan rather than actually giving the right viscosity for a turbo car that will throw off a lot of heat when hard used as intended |

There seems to be some debate over it being that they "lost" it or if they simply didn't spend the money on testing for an obsolete specification. I can't find it at the moment but one of the reformulated oils that supposedly "lost" it was still approved for a pretty much identical specification that was still in use on new models by Porsche or Mercedes which seems to support that they're simply not spending money to test for LL-01 anymore.

According to the label it's 0W30.

5W-30 is cheaper than 0W-30 or 0W-40. Any 0W oil runs a premium because they only come synthetic. 5W-XX can be a synthetic blend.
I would recommend LL01 if you wait for 1 year or 10K mile intervals but LL01 comes at a premium too. If you don’t mind dumping your oil like every 6 months or 5K miles, you can go with like M1 or whatever with the highest API rating. I think Costco and Amazon oil also falls into this, but I trust Costco Motor Oil more than Amazon Basics lol. I feel you only need LL01 if you have really long interval, hence the name “Long Life”. |

With that being said, Costco sells their 2 pack 5 quart synthetic for $25 when its on sale, $30 normally. Hard to beat those prices. I've been using it on my MDX for the last 3 oil changes. I did a used oil analysis on one of those intervals that went 8500 miles and showed nothing abnormal compared to previous ones. Still don't have the cajones to put the stuff in my M3 or X3 even though the M3 is out of warranty and the X3 is nearly out of warranty. |
