My steering wheel wrap thoughts
For those interested, I wanted to give my steering wheel a different look and wasn't looking to replace the wheel but to add to it. After weeks of research I decided to take the plunge on a wheel wrap. And here are my thoughts...
The wrap looks very professional, material feels great, and perfect fit. I customized it and went with suede sides, perforated leather top/bottom, light blue 12 o'clock marker, light blue and red stitching and blue thread. I paid $70 shipped. I did ask how much it would cost for alcantara sides and was quoted $125. The couple of issues I had is with the left side of the wrap where you need to tuck in the extra fabric (9 o'clock). There wasn't enough fabric to tuck in (not really visible unless you go looking for it) and at 6 o'clock I was unable to tuck the fabric in, but that's my only gripes (see last two pics where I point it out). I ended up not using the double sided tape which is optional. I also have the heated steering wheel feature but have not tried it yet but during my research I read reviews people had no issues just took a minute or so longer to heat up the wheel. Overall I am very satisfied with the results and how it came out. Here are my pros and cons on this wrap. Pros:

2 and half hours. the sewing could be tedious to some, but the outcome outweighs that. truthfully it took me more time to tie them damn knots at the end of each section to prevent the thread from unraveling.

your alcantara replacement wheel looks fantastic! one of the reasons why i wrapped it just didn't have it in me to shell out $500+ on a replacement wheel and justify it with the wifey. |

Mate, no offence, but it looks terrible... The issue at 9 o'clock is exactly where one keep's his hand, so even if you don't see it, you feel it, then delaying the heating for 1 minute ruins the whole point of having this function in the first place, as the whole interior will begin to warm up by that time, and if the sides are not alcantara, then it will worn out fast...

I don't mean to defend anybody here, but that's a cultural differences at play - Eastern Europe and US are hugely different when it comes to feedback and general tone of discussion. I lived in both, in case you wonder. Just my $0.02 here.

BMWofVS I have mine on order too so I'll post pics when I get it installed. It looks like you did a good job with the stitching. |

regards to the heated wheel i haven't tested it yet with the wrap on just some of the reviews i read. my heated steering wheel gets pretty hot pretty quick on the f15 much faster before the interior warms up. i basically need to turn it off within 5-10 mins because it gets hot and uncomfortable so the wrap may be a good thing if you worried about the suede not lasting, worry no more. i never drive with two hands (maybe once in a blue moon during long road trips) it's mainly just my left and occasionally will switch over to right. but even then my hand is always between the 11-12 o'clock positions on the wheel. thanks. Wrapped my steering wheels last year. Two cars took me the entire afternoon. It turned out pretty good, worth every single stitch.

So i messaged the company in regards to the fabric not being long enough at the 9 o’clock mark and got this reply:
This part would be caused by a unproper installation. To make it more perfect, you could try to install the cover again. This time, you can tuck the leather into spokes at first, then sewing the leather together. Not going to reinstall it again as I’m fine with it but to their point i do recall tucking in the bottom pieces (fabric behind the controls) later in my sewing efforts. Lesson learned. |
