Engine Sound on Cold-Start
Any ideas what this sound is?
I'm thinking its the tensioner chain but can't find good videos to compare it to. Got ACL bearings...don't think it's rod knock. |

I've had the same issue for about a year - read the same posts and saw no one came up with a solid answer in almost 8 years, so I'm tabling it for now, leaning towards Vanos but that's just a guess. I'm not overly worried about it.

It isn't a guess . There was "one" Puma case regarding the S65 Vanos-Gears .

We've had a 2013 E93 M3 for almost 1-1/2 years and I can say the cold idle is a bit wonky/lumpy for about the same amount of time that it takes my Dodge truck to go from open loop to closed loop on cold start. My truck does it smoother but it kicks the idle higher on cold starts to cover up it's confusion! ;-) I figure it's a tradeoff for owning such an amazing BMW (break my wallet) car...., |

VANOS gears it is! Why not, can't be too bad, haha - couldn't hurt at 150k miles. Thanks for sharing that, it is a shame the tech couldn't document if that fixed the noise.
