No iPod Pouch for '09 E9X

I noticed that '08 models equipped with the 6FL option included a cool iPod pouch attached to the bottom of the lid to the armrest compartment, but my '09 E92 M3 did not come with this even though it has the 6FL option. I asked my CA about it when I took delivery, but he didn't know anything about it.

Today, I spoke to a parts advisor at Circle BMW, who confirmed that the iPod pouch is no longer included with the 6FL option. He stated that there were only a "small handfull" left and could order one for me for $47. I jumped on it because it will free up space in the compartment. Just wanted to post this in case other '09 owners are interested.

I don't have the part number. The guy at Circle said it's normally not sold separately, so I'm not sure whether it has its own part number. From what I can tell, it doesn't:

If your local dealer can't figure it out, give Circle BMW's parts department a call.

Due, $47!!! I'll sell you mine!!

It's kinda cheesey for BMW to take that away. I wonder if they'll return it now that the Euro is down to 1.2x against the dollor.

I can only guess that bcoz the 09 iDrive comes with a 80gig drive, BMW AG believes that most folks would be importing the mp3s, thereby making the iPod case obsolete.

Still nice to be able have the case though, leaves more room for other things

thks for the illustrated parts breakdown photo...

and the PN guys

80GB drive, but only 12GB available for music. I did a really sweet DIY with a Marware iPod case last night. I'll take pics and post it later today/tonight.

My solution. The Marware C.E.O. Flip Vue for iPod touch 2G (link) cost me $25.

They use a common connector on their cases (called Multidapt). I took the belt clip apart, and shaved the back flat, and then screwed that into the underside of the armrest (along with a little crazy glue).

I also shaved the locking nub on the back of the case (marked in the picture in green) so that the case would slide relatively freely on and off the clip back (the way it comes, it slides on freely and locks with a click, and to remove you have to push on the nub through a little hole in the clip).

The ultimate solution means that I can just unplug the dock connector and slide the iPod in the case right out. It's actually easier to insert/remove than the BMW pouch. And if I ever get an iPod that doesn't have a compatible case/clip, I can remove and install the pouch over the same location.

Ok guys, dumb question:

How do I take the pouch off? Is it velcro? A clip of some kind? Glue?

I ask because I intend (as soon as its released) to install a 3G cradle, and mod it to allow patch-in of the 6FL cable too. So I won't need the pouch and would rather just have it gone.

BTW, TLud, didn't you order 6NF in your car? If so, does it have the cradle baseplate? I ask because another member, rmmcdaniel, recently posted pics of his 6NF equipped car and it has the adapter plate in there.

I believe the pouch is screwed in with three screws.

Really? Where would they be? If I feel inside the pouch, I don't find any screws.

I'm not sure. I just know that the posts that tell people how to get the pouch if they don't already have it indicate that to do it themselves (per the BMW service docs) they need to order the pouch and 3 screws.

But since mine didn't come with the pouch, I can't check.

Okay, thanks KevinO. Its really strange, because it seems like it would be velcro'd on or something but when I pull it with some force if feels like its going to rip apart or something. I just don't want to destroy my armrest, lol.

Ya. It screws in to the top of the arm rest. Have a look again. I think you have to unfold the thing to get to the screws in memory serves ...

Aha, thanks for the help guys. I realize now how to do it. There's a velcro strap on the front of the pouch that you must undo, and then there's a flap that makes up the back of the pouch that you must flip outward. Under that are the screws. They appear to be torx screws though, so it looks like I need to either get the right size or just use my vice grips.

How much do you want for the pouch and screws? I'd like to have it in case my solution doesn't hold up, or I can't get the right size case for a future iPod.

I wouldn't feel right selling it - its just a pouch. I'll give it to you for free if you want it, but not until I can get an iPhone 3G cradle/adapter installed and working properly in the car. It could be while for that, so you probably don't want to wait around for me.

Just so you know, it goes for $60 or so if you order from BMW. I'm in no hurry, as I have a solution for now. I work at a certain fruit-themed computer and now consumer electronics company, so if you want to send it my way, I'm sure I can help you out with a future purchase in some way.

Thanks KevinO. I'll let you know when the 3G cradle adapter comes out, and I figure out how to get it in the car.
