Heat Shield Rubbing Rotor
Heading back to the paddock after Session 1 on Friday and heard a sickening metal on metal grinding noise coming from the left rear.
Get to my pit and have my pal Andy walk next to the car as I drive slowly and he confirms the noise is the left rear. I put my jack under the car and the guy pitting next to us grabs my impact gun and starts loosening the lug bolts. (Track people are just awesome) I pull the caliper and bracket, then the rotor. Found that the heat shield must have gotten hot and "oil canned" into the rotor. So weird. A little hammer and dolly work and we were ready to go!

I second that, I've been driving without them for years and besides some extra brake dust on suspension components, it really does seem to benefit the brake cooling without any other downsides.
