Just wanted to run this situation by the community. Today down in FL we had some tremendous rain. I'm on the highway getting ready to pass a semi in the rain, give it the full beans to pass and next thing I know I get a drivetrain malfunction on the screen, check engine light flashing and I get basically no power out of the engine. I can feel in the pedal almost a stuttering feeling. At first I thought I blew the transmission. Pulled off to the side put it in park and shut the engine off. Let it sit for maybe 30 seconds. Lights go out, power is restored and we continued on our trip. I gave it maybe another 5 full throttle runs after with no issues. I'm due for oil service now so I'll have them scan it. Has anyone had this issue? Vehicle is a 2018 sdrive 35 with 39k on it

Went to go pop the hood today to see if I could find anything. Looks like the oil filter housing is leaking from where I can see some oil residue. Plus the top of the engine cover appears to have residue on it too. Im figuring oil dripped into the belt and when I gave it the beans in the rain the engine reved and the belt slipped causing the drivetrain malfunction.

This could be the possible culprit of the oil leak as well. Looks like the oil filler cap has failed which could have leaked oil on the belt

How does the oil filler cap even get like that? On a 2018 model? Just curious.

I was thinking the same thing. Looks that had a bad seal for a long time or was put wrong and dust was building up. Weird and bad.

Not only that but how the does the dealer come back and tell me…"He (the tech) said the way the oil cap looks right now is normal, no need to replace it." I inquired that I wanted it replaced anyways. I don't buy that's normal operation whatsoever after my 4th bmw CB and asked how much. I was told it was $65. Which is horseshit cause other bmw dealers I found online selling them for 20-25. Autozone had the identical part for 6.99…you could clearly tell the seal had failed and oil was seeping through the gunk.

They ran the codes for the drivetrain malfunction and stated they found no oil leaks or anything getting on the belt. Codes stated Cylinder 3&4 had a simultaneous misfire at the exact same time. They ran a test and everything came back ok. They switched 1&3 and sent me on my way. I was worried about this and was planning on just switching all coils and plugs as preventative. I spoke to a popular Indy bmw mechanic and told him the situation, stated I was in the rain for hours on the highway floored it in the rain he said it probably just injected a little water and caused the foul. Cause it's been fine ever since.
So I'll hold off on anything for now. But the oil cap thing really pisses me off. Here's a pic of the old and the new.

Is it possible that the oil cap was not tightened during last oil change and oil seeps thru the threads?

Sure I guess that's possible, I mean I've cleaned the engine cover before and m never noticed it off center or anything. What's odd to me too is that they knew I had a concern for this cap, it clearly has oil residue on it and they claim it's normal and never even bothered to clean it off.
