I'll assume you have the door with a rolling code.
You have to go first assuming you don't have a rolling code door (even if you do). You can't skip this step for some reason. 1. Unplug your garage door opener (pull plug from ceiling). 2. Inside the car with the ignition on (not the first position but the position where everything lights up), first press and hold the 1st and 3rd button on the mirror for about 30 seconds to clear all the memories. A light will flash after 30 seconds or so. It was quite long for me. 3. Taking your garage door remote, put it up to the mirror facing the buttons, and push the #1 mirror button and HOLD it pressed and at the same time press and hold the garage door opener remote button. Nothing will happen. 4. Leave the ignition on and get out of the car and plug the garage door opener back in. 5. Now reach up and press the "learning" button on the garage door opener. It should say learning button or something like that. 6. As soon as you press the button, you have about 30 seconds to hustle back into the car and press and hold the #1 button for about 3 seconds or so. At that point, either the garage door will open or close while you are holding the button, or nothing will happen. If the door works, you are done. If the door doesn't work after holding the button for 3 seconds, just let go of the button and press it again...the door will then work...guaranteed (I hope...he he). You are done. If you have more doors, do the same thing again but don't do the erasing memory thing. Most people who have the rolling code doors skip step #3 since they know it won't work. You still have to go through the motions. The reason I unplug the door opener for #3 is to stop the cycling of the door when you press the garage door remote with the mirror buttons. Another thing you can't do with rolling codes is what I tried. I have one big door and I tried to program all three buttons to the same door so it wouldn't matter which button I pushed to open the door. Well, if you program button #1...when you then go and program button #2...button #1 now will not work, but only #2 will work....and so on. One door...one button. I sure hope this works for you as it really can be frustrating. |

just follow the manual instructions with the following hint, because I also had problems getting the M3 remote light to change from blinking slow to blinking fast:
Hold the garage remote control so it's touching or practically touching the mirror area next to the button. When I held the remote only 3-4" away, the M3 system would not pick up the signal! AMazing but true... I had to actually hold it within 1/2" to get the signal from the remote picked up. And the remote can open the garage from 50 yards away so the signal is not that low! |

It's the distance to the mirror! Newtom3 is right on. You have to be kissing that dam rearview for it catch the signal... drove me nuts! It's all good now. Hey, did anybody try doing two cars on one large door? This riddle i cannot solve. I want to program both wife's car and my own to open same door, but one cancels the other. Maybe I have to do them at exactly the same time???

Make sure the car is running while you perform the programming steps

I have two cars with multiple mirror buttons doing two garage door lifts... yes you absolutely you can program two cars to kpen the same large door. Just follow the same directions that worked on the M3 with the other car (adjusting for anything the other car manual says differently) and it will work fine. btw, on my LandRover... same thing I had to kiss the remote to the mirror buttons practically. |

Good luck and let us know what finally works for you. I can get my F-150 programmed no problems but the 535 and M3 just won't work. I'm going to try one last time with the BMW's engine running and see if that will help!

I realize this comes a year late, but after two days of trying to program the stupid thing, buying new batteries, banging my head against the wall...
what finally worked was holding the remote between the rearview mirror and the front windshild; as close as possible to the rearview mirror. As soon as I did that, it picked up the signal immediately. The rest was easy. |

OMG I love you guys!
After using a small stupid remote for months I was finally able to program the garage opener! Yes, just place the original remote on the mirror and press both buttons! |

I'm never moving or changing the garage door opener. Don't want to waste another 15-30 minutes of my life to get that thing set again. Probably one of the most non user friendly devices out there.

Sounds like a good reason not to move. I keep telling my wife I bought my M3 because I wanted to upgrade the stereo in my S2000.

Thread revival.
I tried programing mine earlier, with no luck. Going to try tomorrow morning by having teh remote "kiss" the mirror. Before I was doing it about 3-5 inches off.

I spent about 45 min earlier in the day trying to program it without success. I read this thread and now it works. I held the remote up to the mirror. Took less than 5 sec to get it programmed.

Def works. I have both a M3 and the Range Rover HSE. Both when I kissed the mirror, the suckers work. (FYI BMW use to own Land Rover back in the early 2000s, so some of the supply parts are from BMW suppliers. Lots of 2003 to I believe 2008 HSE models use that same sort of garage opener/mirror type systems seen on BMWs). My 2003 model had all BMW parts and a BMW engine as well (V8 from then time 740). Was the best Range I had, the rest sux in quality afterwards.
BMW sold Land Rover to Ford and now Ford sold to Tata

Tried it again last night to no avail
When you guys say "kiss" the mirror, are you holding it right up to the glass or the base by the buttons? Also, do you suggest programming it right in the driveway? My garage door just keeps on opening and closing each time I try it...
