2016 vs 2017
I'm looking to buy an X5. I have two vehicles in mind. Both are X-drive 35i, one is a 2016 and the other is a 2017. Just wondering what changes were for the 2017 model year. Both have similar mileage but the 2016 is 3 grand less, so basically wondering if there are changes on the 2017 that make it worth the extra cash.

As others have said, the biggest difference is the head unit version - with the 2017 you get NBT Evo ID5/ID6 which includes touchscreen functionality and optional OEM Apple CarPlay. No OEM CarPlay options in 2016 or prior on the X5. And then wireless charging was also an option starting in 2017.
Aside from the above, no changes. There may have been some slight package configuration changes, but otherwise no differences. |

I would go for the 2016 and save the money. I got a 2017 thinking the improved idrive would be worth it, but it really isn't. Maybe if I had an iPhone I would appreciate it more, but doubt I would appreciate it enough to warrant an extra $3K.
Luckily I didn't pay significantly more for my 2017 compared to what 2016s were going for at the time. |

I had a 2014 which I replaced with a carbon copy only as a 2017. There were subtle differences, most of which for the better. Only a few small take aways.
If the two X5's your are looking at are similar spec, I'd go with new one. |

My 2016 exhaust tips are round and the 2017 rectangular. Go figure the GO5 is round coming out of a rectangular outlet.
Best of both lol. |

Thanks. Lots of good comments. As for the i-drive version, I probably wouldn't value the updated version too much as I'm older and don't use much of the tech stuff. My current car has Android Auto and I never use it. So maybe I'm with Ascotgrun and leaning towards saving money with the 2016.

What's New for 2018? BMW tweaked the X5's eight-speed automatic transmission for 2018 and made paddle shifters standard on the plug-in hybrid xDrive40e model. Both gasoline-powered 35i models and the diesel-burning 35d receive new trapezoidal tailpipe finishers, and non-hybrid X5s with the M Sport package can be upgraded to 21-inch wheels with performance run-flat tires. |

You didn't read my post correctly. I said I don't value the tech that much because I don't really use it. I stream podcasts alot, but other than that I listen to HD or satellite radio most of the time, both of which the 2016 has.

More importantly than model year IMO is how they're spec'd. I'd take a well optioned 2014 over a stripper 2018 assuming the mileage wasn't miles apart. Even then I'd have a hard time giving up most packages/options just to have newer.
