I can't believe what carmax offered me

They literally just gave me a offer of 48,000 for my 2016 m3 dct with 38,850 miles. My car is in great condition and is well equipped but it dosent have the carbon brakes it's not a competition nor a individual color, just black on black (metallic). Literally giving me 300 more than what I paid for it back in early 2020 with 29k on the clock. I dont think I would have even posted it here for that much if I were to make a for sale thread.

Yeah the car is great I like it 👌 but I really don't think I will ever be able to recoupe on a used car like this ever again.

What would you people do ditch this car then wait for the market to tank 🤔 . Or keep it and pay the ridiculous high maintenance costs that loom over these cars when they reach around 60k miles. I know I will need an overpriced battery, will eventually have top mount charge cooling leak issues, top engine oil leaks, valvetronic assembly might fail, diff leaks, who knows how many years you can get out of the turbos . Iam really torn on what route I should take ????

I’m thinking of trading my 2019 M4 for cash.
I have 4 other vehicles.

Just bought out the lease on my 2020 (it was up) for about $47,600, and the car has 17k miles. Supposedly worth $68-$72k. Unreal. Will someone really buy a 3 year old car for 80% of MSRP?

You could get considerably more for that car in a private sale, and I don't think you'd have much difficulty selling it. But then why bother, you won't be able to find anything nearly as good for twice the price.

People are completely out of their minds in regards to what they're willing to pay for used autos these days. I don't know what the hell is wrong with them.

It's definitely a strange market out there. I don't think we can predict what cars will be selling for in the next few years. I have access to Manheim and the MMR is insane right now. Unless you want to get into a G8x there is no reason to sell your car.

It might seem like a good deal. But it only makes sense if you are buying new at msrp, or waiting 1-2 years for the used car market to cool off and then buying. Carmax will probably list your car for mid 50s.

I got my 2015 f80 6mt loaded with 30k miles listed at 53 and have had a bit of interest. One guy dug his heels at 50 just a few days after i listed. Not gonna sell for less as im getting into the very overinflated e92 m3 market next.

Sure, but only if you are not replacing the car in this market and in the near future. During recent car shopping for another vehicle, every BMW dealer offered me sick money for my M2. But I'm keeping that car forever, so no thanks.

This is my second f80…first was a 2015 and I can say after having owned many BMW's over the years this vehicle is by far the most reliable I've ever owned. The issues you mention do happen but not to every vehicle.

Maybe your right 😉, it's just this is my first bmw and the maintenance/repair cost make me go dizzy. My other performance car only costs big money when iam upgrading it. This costs big dollars just leaving it stock.
I got a reliable 4 cylinder for daily commute to work and idk just the market with how it is and this m3 being 6 years old. I can get out of it now and there literally paying me to own it for 2 years, it makes me think. And I know the market is not going to fall off for quite some time so.....if I want another one iam definitely not getting one like this driven by a bmw purist that never tracked the car or modded it with a 5 star carfax/service record. Took 4 + months of searching thru the trash online to get it, dam thing still has the brakes from the factory on with a ton of life left.

Iam just a bit nervous and got them dollar signs in my eyes 🤑

Well at least current/active car loans don't increase with inflation. Number for number, yes you will recoup your money. You only gain if you sell and reinvest the money towards your self(pay off debt or towards debt). Financially you will regain more freedom perhaps.

Ive owned a 06' M5 for 8 years. Paid about 285 a month for the original 5YR loan. My M2 lease was 780 for three years not including insurance cost... If I treated the difference $495 (780-285) and put it away to a savings for my M5 maintenance. That would be about $5940+/yr that I could put towards maintenance and repairs every year. FCP Euro has top charge cooler for $750 and should at least last several years.

I say that as a matter of perspective since some people are now out of warranty. and try to value what they have, old vs new.

Not a bad time as long as you can get at MSRP or below.

Your car choice however.....

that's the question, can I?

I agree - I consider it the least of the bad choices.
I do not like that new grill design and I really dislike ID7 (hoping 8 sucks less), but it's pretty much the only option for a 2-door M vehicle (the M2's a bit too small) and the M8 isn't an option...

Yes, you will be able to find the car at MSRP (won't guarantee lower though!). However, be prepared to search high and low as I've found a number of dealers (generally in high population areas) are asking over MSRP. I've been quoted everything from $5k over to $20k over (?!??!). I'd say it's been about 50/50 between the dealers I've spoken with, that being those asking for a markup and those not. I think a significant economic downturn is just around the corner however, and soon these dealers are going to get stuck with inventory from people who are tapped out. If I were you, I'd wait another 3-6 months to see what happens.

I totally get your feelings on just buying the car because nothing else is available. I made that mistake last June getting a G82. Best of luck in whatever you decide, I just don't want to see somebody make the same mistake I did.

Thank you! I'm planning to wait (I don't know what will happen next economy and subsequent impact wise...)
I figure the M nature of the vehicle will blind me to other obvious shortcomings...(or so I hope)
