F82 M4 Rattle
I have a 2016 BMW M4, under hard acceleration there is a rattle in the back of the car, it sounds like it's coming from the back seat, anyone have any idea what it could be? it's like if there is plastic rattling or something of that sort. I made an appointment with BMW and even though I've got Warranty on the car they want to charge me $240 for the diagnostic alone. I'd rather see if there is another option before I pay for something that warranty somehow doesn't cover. Thanks!

This is very open-ended. You need to take everything out of the car and drive it to verify. Wouldn't hurt to have someone in the car with you at the same time as well.
When you say the vehicle is under warranty, is it CPO? That won't cover noises. I don't think 4/50 covers general noises either unless a manufacturing defect is found. Either way, the dealer charging you for the diagnosis is correct. Some dealers have a little more common sense and understand maintaining relationships with customers so they goodwill diag time for things like that.

I get a little BRRRRTT from a rear heat shield somewhere, only when accelerating from a stop while turning a corner. I figure the exhaust might be really close somewhere back there. Gotta get underneath and start thumping around with a fist to find the vibe.

Today I solved the noise like mine's seat... always thinking about Midpipe rear diff and others... it's the handbrake cable rubbing on the central axis... there are photos of the problem and some posts explaining it... this problem is at the end of the axle reaching the rear.

In my case, the rear seat lateral trim door panel LED strips were rattling and then few years later the 3rd brake light cover was rattling.
The front door LED strips rattle too if I press my knee against the door handles when I drive. |

Best thing to do is have someone drive the car to replicate conditions of the rattle while you are sitting in the back. For my car, the lock pin was vibrating through the grommet in the door card. Was bugging me for a few weeks because it was so hard to pinpoint.

IMO, unless the rattle is something obvious like if you touch something and it stops rattling, I wouldn't tear the car apart and search for it. You might make it worse from tearing the car apart or create another rattle. Just increase the music volume lol. Have you checked the seats to make sure they are latched all the way and the seatbelts?

I had a rattle around the third brake light area but my car was under warranty when the dealer resolved it. If I lightly hit around the rear area of the roof and top of rear window
from the outside the rattle could be heard pretty clearly. The dealer attributed it to a poorly fitted headliner and resolved it by applying felt tape to headliner contact points. Another rattle in the rear I had, but wasn't too loud, is around the child seat covers. I applied felt tape around those to remove the rattle. Best to just sit back there while someone if driving. If thats not possible, then lightly hit areas you think might be causing the rattle and if you hear a rattle apply felt tape. I've been able to resolve all rattles in my car (heads up display & top light on roof) with just taking things apart and applying felt tape. |
