Time to Say Good-bye to a Classic

It looks like we've seen the last of this beauty. Good thing is there's mo better in the future. Interesting read I came across.

That engine has treated me very well for the last 6 years and 10s of thousands of hard track miles.

Am I missing something here? Did they not retire that engine as soon as the NEW M engine was announced like..years ago?

it was still in the Z4M, so it technically wasn't retired yet

S54 Go Boom... I had an 11/01 build, so apart from the two rod bearing recalls , it was great.

Definitely BMW's crowning I6 achievement.

That engine was a blast. Had two e46 M3's and did not have a single problem with either one. That motor owned all the competition from MB and Audi!

Definitely agree on the crowning achievement part. Pulled hard and was raw...lots of fun!

Its so raw and edgy above 3krpm and at the track I couldn't have asked for more from it

I owned my E46 from 03' until 08' and it was absolutely the best car I've owned

Too bad there are so few Z4 M's I think its something like 1400 cars

Definitively one of the best engines ever produced by any manufacturer. If I had money I would buy one and keep it in my living room. My spine tingles everytime I see an e46 m3 gun it past me.

I can't stop thinking about this now, damn it... Im about to cry, that 4EVRS54 licence plate is sick.

It will be hard for M Division to top the S54 with their upcoming turbocharged I6. I'm sure it will make more power and torque, but will it provide as much character of the old naturally aspirated 3.2L?
