Motor replaced by BMW (50i) what's my X5 worth now?

Hi all,

Last year BMW footed the bill for a replacement motor on my 2015 X5 50i M Sport. The vehicle itself has 75k Miles but I've only put about 8k miles on the new motor.

Trying to get an idea as to what a fair asking price would be. Space Grey w black leather, Executive Package, M sport, DHP.

What was wrong with the original engine? The current market with that milage based on what I have been seeing is $27K. A dealer might get more and I'm unsure what trade-in value is.

The original motor had 0 compression in cylinder (7?) They chalked it up to a leaking fuel injector washing the oil from the cylinder wall.

did you have a warranty thru a 3rd party to cover this? just curious how/why BMW agreed to foot the replacement

No 3rd party warranty - It took a bit of work on my part, initially I thought it was a failed injector - it was the only code I could pull aside from misfires. I let the dealer take a look because there was a relevant TSB/recall on injectors. They called me back and told me the cylinder that had the injector issue also has no compression and scoring.

I got quoted ~20k at first and after some back and forth I told them to prove to me it WASN'T related to the known fuel injector issue or I'd be contacting an attorney. A few days later they let me know BMW agreed to cover the full cost as a good will gesture.

I was very fortunate, and to be honest - it did probably save me from never buying a BMW again.

So - any thoughts on what the car might be worth? Would 10k over the average price on an otherwise comparable X5 be crazy?

just my opinion here but the replaced engine doesn't ad value or really detract. i'd list it at the going rate for your zip code and go from there

I bought a 2016 X5 50i with B&O, DHP, DA+, and a few other options and lots of extra oil services for under market 90 days back. I had to look all over to find it and it was a used dealer that does only high line and exotics and priced it over market. I don't think the market is great enough to support overprice but you never know what the locals will pay. I would like that a vehicle had a fresh motor but I have had V8 Bimmers and I am a retired master tech and was a BMW tech years back. For many buyers past problems, even well repaired, are scary.

Yeah, seems like the known issues with the N63 and the TU has driven the used prices down. Only an enthusiast would appreciate the added value.

I might be better off driving it until something major fails. I recently replaced the rear air springs and have the parts for a full brake job sitting in my garage.

Your x5 is worth what most any other is, sad to say. Maybe a couple K to an enthusiast, but most people will actually take this as a negative. It’s an invasive procedure on a pretty complicated vehicle. Unless they did a nut and bolt check on everything they touched since then… yikes.

Lucky you with the free motor tho!

My motor was replaced a couple of years ago too. I looked at it as I’m stuck with my X5 now.. you can’t get any extra value selling it but at least you have an $80k car with a new motor.

You'll probably get up to 10% over the general market average on account of the new engine. It seems that number is high 20's at the moment for a 50i, you could be able to get maybe 30k. I'd list it at 32 and negotiate from there.

unless its a private party deal, hes not going to get more for a new engine. in fact most people dont want to even know you have replaced the engine as theyd rather see it with the original engine.

i dont think your care would be worth any more or less than regular market value.

I agree, which is why I said "up to 10% more". To the right person, it's maybe worth a little more. To the wrong person, it could be worth less.

It's easy for buyers to think "this vehicle has had major issues" rather than "this vehicle has had major service done that should prevent future issues"

My hypothetical is: would you buy a car with 75k that just needed $20k in work, or buy the same car with 75k that has never needed major work? Will the majority of buyers feel that past issues are indicative of future problems? In this vein, why does OP want to dump his X5 that now has a brand new engine?

I also had a new engine installed from BMW last year. I had to pay 60% based on my mileage being over 100k at the time of failure per the Isley Settlement. Fortunately, I was able to negotiate with dealership to sell me all the wear items at wholesale and they replaced them when the new motor went in. This included motor mounts, o2 sensors, new oem turbos, oil returns and a water pump. I'm sure I'm forgetting something but my logic was spending 11k now was better than spending $100k on a new replacement as the Sticker on my car at time of original purchase was $98K - I love the car and it was worth it to me.

a new motor is def piece of mind to a buyer but all of the other items on this car are so expensive just because there is so much labor required in getting to each component.

I believe its mixed bag as to how a buyer will value the motor

good luck regardless
