would you buy a car with a spun bearing?

Auction up on BaT right now. Service receipts list that he took it in to BMW for a ticking noise and they replaced the RBs. On closer inspection, they also pulled the heads (new head gaskets in receipts) and replaced the crank shaft. Replaced crank shaft I assume means spun bearing. Now, that was 30k miles ago, and done by BMW... Would you trust them to flush it out well enough to not worry about it going forward?

To me that’s long enough to gamble if the price is right.

well sure, but is the right price for you pricing in a new engine in the near future?

You asked for a opinion, and now you counter mine with an aggressive answer... Do what you want, your money not mine.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...-m3-coupe-9-2/

28K + $1400 in BaT fees + $1K to get it to the US..

Not sure I'd pay (and didn't) 30k+ for a car that may need a new engine. People get fixated on the low miles too much.

If BMW had done the crank and rod bearing replacement job incorrectly, problems would've surfaced in the subsequent 30K miles prior to the BAT sale IMO. If the price was right and the crank had been replaced, yes I'd probably buy it. This particular 2008 E92 M3 sold for $28K today (7/21/23) which given the 39K mileage and condition (as well as new rod bearings and crank) seems about right. Someone wanted it badly and it was bid up from $11K to $28K in under 15 minutes today. The repairs had already been done in November 2011.

Repair done 12 yrs / 30k miles ago, I wouldn't worry about the engine at all. Any potential issues would have surfaced years ago. Plus it was done by BMW. Probably replaced everything as precautionary.

Maybe I’m missing something, but if the main bearings and rod bearings have been replaced, why would this car possibly need a new engine?

Since it looks like it spun a bearing, I’d be worried about unflushed debris causing a repeat down the line.

For 30k you could probably do better than something with an engine story.

If this is your main concern then I would said NO since you will constantly thinking about it after purchased.

Yeah that’s why I passed. I’d pay in the low 20s, pricing in a new engine. Obv the market doesn’t agree with me and that’s fine.

No. Personally I would not buy a car with a spun bearing.

I dont recall these cars ever getting crankshafts as part of any warranty repair protocols. I think all of that stopped with the s54, if there was even an issue under warranty it was a new engine.

This is my thought as well. Paying the hours to a tech to tear down, rebuild and reinstall just isn’t worth it. I’d assume half the time to swap in replacement long block and associated lines.

OP, personally I wouldn’t care about a spin bearing that was repaired. If you really wanted to dig deep, pay for a PPI and have the shop cut open the filter. It does seem there a less “storied” M3s out there

my car spun a bearing in 2015 and the engine was replaced under warranty with a new engine. the only issue with this is most dealers dont request the owner come back in for a run in service after 1500mi, my car went 5000mi on the same oil.

i can only assume that was done because it was still early days ('08 model, work done early on in production run).

but yeah, i'm happy with my choice, just wanted to understand if i'm the outlier. sounds like (predictably) a mix.
