Will adding a carbon roof increase value?
I have the sunroof and want to install a carbon roof. I believe it’s like $2,500 installed. Will that help my resale value? Car is 2011 M3 DCT COMP.

Unless you find somebody that wants the mods you’ve done to the car, an unmodified car will fetch more. And modifying a structural component will never be a good return on investment in my experience.

Maybe if it's done by a super reputable shop. The CF roof is a huge liability if not done correctly. Even factory ones are cracking/yellowing at this point. I prefer slicktop, and that's the only config I'd pay extra for. Luckily, both of my cars are slicktops, and I didn't even pay extra for it.

I would suggest that, on an E90, maybe enough to offset the cost, but only maybe. On an E92, no way. Personally I would avoid it and go for a car with a factory one every time. Too risky IMHO.

It would detract value for me... drilling / cutting out a metal roof, welding / painting reinforcements, and gluing an aftermarket roof in? No way does that add value

I'll pay market value for cars that match the build-sheet.
If the car doesn't match the build-sheet, I'll pay 70% of market value. If the car has a salvage title, I'll pay 50% of market value. Those are rough numbers and every car is different but you get the idea. So the math says, 30% of a $25,000 car is $7,500. The $2,500 cost for the CFroof has to yield an extra $10,000 to recoup my cost and + the loss in car value. In this case, it's a no-go. It's almost always a no-go . Almost. I'm being reasonable. |
