Help on M4 selection

Hi all,

New to the F80 and choosing between a pre-LCI 2017 with under 15k miles exec package, zcp, dct, adaptive lights, grey with black leather; and a 2020 Heritage equipped similarly with driver assist but without executive package, 35k, and in Imola red. Build dates are September 2016 and June 2020. Price difference is 6,000.

I am thinking the 2020 given it is almost 4 years newer and a special addition, but 35k miles vs just over 10 is weighing on me a bit as well as lack of exec package.

Both show good service history but I can’t tell if the 17 had the 1500 mile service. The 20 def did.

Thoughts?

Mike

I would go w. the 2017 , more features and save 6k. Also the carbon driver driveshaft is still a thing for that model year. Not so w. the 2020.

Out of curiosity, is the Imola Red car at our local Carmax?

Yes. Another bonus with a potential warranty.

I had a LCI 2016 F80 M3 base model with DCT for 4 years and had a 2020 F82 M4 Comp in manual 6MT with everything except for carbon ceramics for almost 3 years.

I would say day to day driving the only thing that made the 2020 shine more than the 2016 was the technology, more specifically heads up display and apple carplay. If you can live without the heads up display and can retrofit the wireless carplay then i'd go for the 2017. If you don't care about tech then you can make your choice based on other things like exterior color or interior color.

Also pretty sure the 2020 is a M4 since M3 production stopped in 2018. Assuming the pre-LCI 2017 is an M3. Then your choice really comes down to 2 door or 4 door. Both are DCT. If both are M4, then it really comes down to exterior color Grey vs Red.

Just judging based on the miles, the 2017 was babied and the 2020 was driven. Exterior condition on the 2020 might be slightly beaten up, like rock chips and dings here and there. I'd personally look at both and test drive both if you can and make the decision based on that. If you're not happy with any of the two, then you can just wait until you can find something you like, that is a better spec or feature or condition. I wouldn't rush into buying one.

Price difference of 6k and 20k miles difference. Eh. Not that big of a deal. These cars are reliable as hell. Oil change and spark plugs is all I had to do. Both my F80 and F82 had a stage 2 tune with catless downpipes and catless exhaust on stock crank hub.

What does the carbon fiber driveshaft get you in terms of driving characteristics and long term longevity?
