engine overheating notification-drive moderately

I have 2017 X5 I got a notification telling me to drive moderately engine overheating. I received a code saying the water pump needed to be replaced. Replaced water pump and thermostat at the same time. Still getting notification it’s overheating and starting to realize it wasn’t the water pump. Was told it was in limp mode and computer needed to be reset and need to hook up a reader specifically for BMW. OBD II not reading any other codes on it. I have 63,000 miles on it bought it used and had it for almost 2 years. I thought it would be a easy repair, I usually take it to my BMW dealer but this one time I didn’t and I’m mad at myself because WHYYYY?! Please help! Thanks!

Buy cable, download ISTA, run diagnostics, see what the problem is. Do you loose coolant?

I had a low coolant notification a couple of weeks before that and it went away when I added coolant. Not sure if it’s leaking or not.

Well if you did get low coolant notification, it sounds like you got a problem somewhere else and you are loosing coolant from the system. When you replaced the pump and the thermostat, did you perform a full cooling system drain, filled the system and bled it properly? For ISTA- its technically BMW software so most of the forums won't allow posts with direct links, but Google is your best friend.

Buy a hdd & cable from eBay. A used laptop, as well, if necessary.

When’s the last time you replaced the water pump and thermostat? Common replacement item on these around that mileage.

Fair point, sorry I missed that. Another leak check would be the flange that goes into the cylinder head from the water pump, common failure point.

But agree, need something like ISTA that can help you bleed the system.

Thanks I will try. I’ve also heard I may need to bleed the system.
