Replacing standard speakers with coaxial speakers

Has anyone replaced the standard 4" speakers in the doors and the rear with 4" 2 way coaxial speaker ? Is it possible and would this improve the sound of the standard system?

the standard speakers in AUS are prob dual cone anyway. but without a dedicated tweeter. im sure you could find a 4" coax which would sound better than stock. the key is to take out a stock speaker and measure the ohms. Its most likely 2 ohm. If you buy the usual 4 ohm speaker you will lose tons of volume depending on the sensitivity rating. If you are going to upgrade, you have to match the same ohm load to start with. a 2 ohm speaker will measure at about 1.8 ohm out of the car, and a 4 ohm speaker will measure about 3.4 ohms out of the car.

I was looking at JBL speakers. They appear to be 2ohms and should work fine with the standard system.

I'm thinking about doing a one for one swap with better quality speakers as well. In particular, I'm looking for better detail at low volumes. The stock setup seems to muddy the mids and highs at lower volumes though it does a decent job at mid/high volumes. I realize some of this is due to road noise coming through the RFT's. Still, how much of an improvement could aftermarket high-efficiency replacements really be?

Pulled on of the rear speaker out tonight. The speaker is 4ohms which means that there are a lot of replacement speakers available.

The standard speaker has a second socket to plug in the tweeter which is available on some of the higher stereo options. Will plugging in the standard tweeter change the impedance and will a crossover be required?
