Question How do they update the new I-Drive NAV Maps?

I was wondering since the new I-drive will have newest maps, how can you update it in a year or 2 ? I mean do you still have to buy a DVD ? or do you have to give the car to BMW for a day to the update?

I just got my 09 iDrive system erased and reprogrammed. Based on the conversations with the BMW techs, Germany has yet to tell the NA dealer network a damn thing about the new iDrive. So your guess is as good as theirs for the time being.

Oh and speaking of updates, it took 6 hrs (nonstop) to download the O/S into the car. Something tells me DVD updates. Easier to handle as they just hand it to you and you leave.

It's in the owners handbook (Page 116 - Updating Navigation Data) in the Aussie version. You put a supplied DVD in the drive and follow the instructions on the iDrive screen.

Probably too early to say, but does anyone know if the system will update from the standard CCC DVD or will it be a DVD specifically designed for the new iDrive system?

The CCC and CIC nav are two different systems. The old DVDs won't work.

It's too late now, but you need to keep your music backed up. I'm pretty sure programming erases the contents of the hard drive.
