My car's lost! (missing)

My E92 M3 arrived at the port in New Jersey on Tuesday February 24th. It was to be delivered to the dealer at the very latest last Saturday 3/7. As of today, 3/11 it's still not there and the dealer is telling me it left the port and they are waiting for it to arrive. My dealer is in CT right off of I 95. A three hour drive MAX from the port in NJ.

I'm really wondering what the hell is going on with my car???

This is absolutely killing me. I've got to get break-in miles on it and the first service before a BMWCCA track day at Lime Rock Park on 4/10.

Another forum member had this problem also. It's in transit, the trucking company will deliver it when they have a full load of cars to that area. It will show up in the next few days, they always do!

Sounds like this could happen easily and for those who are not tracking their cars as some of us do, it would be easy for the dealer to string you along for a couple days or even weeks!

Keep us updated!

Early 2008 Story...

Massacre at high sea: BMW M3 and 1 Series coupes destroyed

Sad news for Bimmer enthusiasts comes to us from a recent Automotive News report. As the story goes, a container ship en route from Europe to the U.S. delivering the first load of 2008 BMW M3 and 1 Series Coupes hit rough water, causing many of the 470 vehicles on board to come loose and incur damage. Reportedly, 120 vehicles were damaged beyond repair and face their demise at the scrapyard.

BMW of North America is said to have confirmed the report and is currently in the process of finding out how many of its cars were totaled in the incident. The 2008 BMW M3 and 1 Series Coupe are scheduled for primetime in U.S. showrooms beginning in March, but there's no word yet on how this might affect supply. BMW says that cars incurring minor damage will be repaired.

Fully break in at 3,100 miles. Are you planning on putting that many miles before track day? Time is running really short. You will have to do a lots of driving in one month.

How did your co-worker find out that the car was damaged? Did BMW disclose that to him at pickup? Is BMW REQUIRED to make that disclosure to the customer?

It took quite a few phone calls before they discovered it had been damaged and was being repaired. If the damage is under some certain dollar amount, I don't think they were obligated to disclose it. I think in his case, they weren't obligated to disclose...but the cat was out of the bag...since he already knew about it.

I guess he still took the car?

In the NJ Port I think they have a BMW certified Repair Facility that inspects the cars and check for damaged cars that are fixable before delivery. All BMW certified and so and so. I hope your car was not damaged. Good luck on the delivery.

Update... from the dealer today via e-mail -

"Mystery solved!

The port just called and, while BMW's daily activity report shows the car as having been delivered here on the 7th, it never left the port.

As a result of it being in priority 4( available to swap), it was stored toward the back and buried behind a couple of thousand cars, and they didn't catch my putting it in priority 1 (sold unit), so no-one made any attempt to unbury it.
They are doing that now and he said to expect it on Monday, so here we go again..."

At this point, there's NO WAY I'll get enough break-in miles and a first service to be on track on 4/10. Too bad because I won't be in town for the next track day. With Lime Rock going "semi-private", I probably won't be able to get on track until the fall. Oh well, maybe by then I'll have some nice track wheels and tires so I don't have to grind up the PSII's.

I can't help but speculate that all of this is BS and that the car was damaged in transit and they are stalling for time. I'm trying to be positive and not let some of the douche bags here influence me though.

Thanks to those of you that offered constructive or compassionate responses.

You can track the status of your car until the time it left the PDC area. There is no way for the dealer to know the exact arrival time/date of the freight truck. Unless they know something that they don't want you to know. It might take a week or two, US Customs and PDC, before the car can be release for trucking.

I remember my CA told me that my car will arrived on the next day but I told him that it was already on their lot. I always pass by my dealer, on the way home. So I already knew that my car was dropped off recently before I approached him. It still has the Euro plate and Euro bugs on the windshield.

Saturday 3/14/09 -

My car was delivered to the dealer today.

They don't have service on Saturday so that can't prepare it until Monday. I'm pushing them to take delivery on Monday. I suspect they will be looking to wait until Tuesday or even Wednesday.

I'm really getting excited now.
