How accurate is the key fob scanner at the dealer?

Will the scanner at the dealer read the exact KM/Miles that are on the car or could there be a variance in readings?

The only reason that there might be a variance is that your key might not have been in the slot recently if you have CA and use it.From what I understand that it needs to be inserted to update the key.I ran into this with a car that the CA was used most of the time & the milege was off by 10000kms.

Well, the reason why I ask is because I picked up my car from the dealer yesterday after getting the tranny replaced and I specifically told the Service Manager and my SA to not let anyone drive the car without me in it. Low and behold, I get the car back and it had a variance of 6km from the service order. My SA then told me there could be a variance of up to 10km. I'm not so sure if I believe him, though.

When I go in to the dealer the first thing they tell me is to insert the key for about a minute before they even touch the car. The dealer can read top speed, rpms, mileage, etc. With accuracy from what my SA told me...

I personaly would not worry about it.Maybe they test drove it before they replaced the gearbox.Nothing will be gained by pursuing it.

You're probably right that they may have driven it before replacing the gearbox and you're probably right that nothing will be gained by pursuing it but after what I just went through with this particular dealership, I just can't help but to get a bit weary about them. Thanks for all your support, Duncan.

the key readers are close but by NO MEANS exact.

Every SA should update the key memory in the car before using his Key Reader.

I'm surprised you actually bring your car into the dealership for service. I can't imagine the look on your SA's face when you try to get service on your car under warranty, all the while trying to convince him that your car is stock!

It's best to always insert the fob on your trip to the dealer; that way it'd be as up to date as it can get. Plus I always write down the mileage from the odometer and make sure it's printed on the service form before signing it. I tell SA don't want more than 10 miles on the car. They say they have to drive it at least 15 for the oil. Next time I'll tell them to just put 8-1/2 liters and not drive my car; I'd do the top-off myself (I had to do that last time anyway, as it wasn't full).

Me too. Jackasses couldn't change the oil. Stay away from Stealerships. Period.

I mine takes at least 9.3L to have the sensor at the top level. It does not use more than a litre ever 8000kms even with track days so the I do not think it is overfilled.

My SA says he doesn't trust the fob scanner with his "pickier" (read: anal) customers and he gets it directly from the car in case there is any sort of discrepancy later.

I believe him too, cuz whenever I take one of our cars, he makes sure I am with him to inspect every inch of the car(s). Admittedly, I am quite anal. lol

Yeah, that's what the book says, but see below.

Mine took 9.25L after tech let it drain while at lunch. I know with 8.5L it'd be fine (and would never show overfilled either); I can top off the rest. Just hope they give me at least the remainder of the 9th bottle .
