Clutch covered under warranty?

Thinking about getting a used 6MT M3 but if the previous owner abused the clutch, will it be covered under the 4/50 warranty?

Yes, if there is some sort of mechanical problem. No, for wear and tear and abuse.

Clutch I believe is covered under maintenance for wear and tear like pads and rotors (US).

Take that M3's for an intense test-drive to see for any sign of 'slippage' during hard acceleration in several different gears again and again.

That should give you a good idea of how the clutch is doing.

Yes it is (US only). Wear and tear of clutch / brake pads / rotors are covered. Only tire wear and tear is not covered.

Yes, but only if the mechanical problem is with the actual clutch. No for wear and tear.

BMW just replaced my tranny because of a 1st to 2nd gear grind and they wouldn't replace the clutch, saying that the clutch is outside of the tranny and the original tranny in my car had mechanical problems.

What kind of grind are you talking about? I made a thread months ago about a grind that occasionally occurred when I would shift from 1st to 2nd at full throttle+high rpm. Everyone else said it was normal and happened to them.

It is happening to a lot of other members but that doesn't make it normal by any means. BMW claims there is nothing wrong with the tranny's unless they are able to replicate the problem by test driving your car. My car was test driven by the dealer 4 seperate occasions until they were able to replicate it. That's when they changed my tranny under warranty. I'm still in the break in of the new tranny but we'll see if the problem is still there when I'm back to normal, spirited driving.

It's tough to say really. First off, everyone's style of driving is different than others so this will very from driver to driver. Second, the dual clutch plate is a new technology to BMW so there is no way of telling how long it will last because it's too new right now. Of what I'm told, Ferrari began using this technology a while back and their clutches weren't lasting as long as non dual clutch plates. I guess only time will tell.

This is probably somewhat of a gray area. If you show up with a worn out clutch in 5000 miles and they can't find a mechanical issue, they would be reluctant to replace it for free. If it has a decent amount of miles and/or a mechanical issue, they will most likely replace it for free. I think we might have seen reports on both cases although I don't have the time to search for them.

My dealer told me that the clutch is covered under maintenance, but they won't cover it unless the mileage is at least 60-70K (meaning that you have to have bought the extended maintenance plan).

I highly doubt they would replace a worn clutch under warranty unless its due to a faulty part. No way a clutch should go in 4 years/50K miles.

If there is a failure than it is yes. If the dealer takes it out and it is blued and shows evidence of abuse then you're SOL.

we had to replace one for a customer @ 2000 miles, needless to say it was not covered by warranty.

A friend of mine with an M5 and SMG transmission needed a clutch replacement within 18 months of having the car and BMW refused to cover it.

With an SMG!!

Just having SMG or DCT does not mean you can't abuse the clutch - just makes it harder. Do too many high rpm launches and the clutch is going to wear prematurely.

Someone at the dealer here told me about a kid around here with an E92 M3 and that the car had less than 9,000 miles on it and it had 60% clutch wear! I believe he said that was not covered.
