Just an update if you read the original post. My friend and I who is a mechanic were not installing the painted keyhole cover correctly. After watching the video I feel confident that the painted keyhole cover will fit and will try it again. Sorry for any wrong and/or miss information. Nick, from JleviSW.com is/was very kind and there service is excellent! Sorry again for the original post.

The E9X version is the same as the E82. I confirmed this by installing an E9X one on my car. For installation, it is 5-10 minutes with an allen wrench. Just remove the rubber grommet on the door and insert the allen to undo that long screw (it's very long!). Once the screw is out, pull out the door lock mechanism and cover. The LED door light will slide out of the stock piece and slide into the new cover that you can slide back on.

Then replace the allen screw and gromment, that's all

If your battery ever dies, can it be removed to get access to the lock so you can open the door?

I watched the video, and no - that would not be possible.

So - after learning about the 2009 and 2010 models that don't have a trunk lock anymore, you have eliminated the only way to gain access to the car if the battery ever dies, short of breaking a window.

That is one drawback, if your battery is out, you will need to have a locksmith unlock the door through the window. With that said, we have sold these since the introduction of the E46 and I have yet to have a customer run into this problem- I actually can't think of a thread where someone's battery died that caused the car to be impenetrable.

With that said, this goes both ways. Given that the car can only be unlocked with the remote key fob, it will be near impossible to break into.

This was actually the first thing I was thinking. Just the other day I parked behind a 5 series and the owner came out of the store and couldn't get the doors of his car to unlock. I'm assuming his key was out of battery. He kept on trying and trying. A good five minutes goes by and I finally stopped laughing, I was wondering how long it was going to take before it dawns on him that he has a key. I was just about to put down my window down to tell him and he finally figured it out. I'm not sure what I would do if I had this item installed and ran into the same issue.

Ok that is very weird, I am going to check with Bimmian on differences in the part. I installed that same part on my US-Spec 135 and it fit without any issues. I am wondering if there is a difference between US and Euro Spec door handles or perhaps pre/post facelift 1ers.

I see the difference, your car does not have the door handle lights that is part of the lighting package so the keyhole cover is a slightly different shape. The keyhole covers we send out have the spot underneath open for the lighting package so it is compatible with the LED. However, it should still fit on cars without the lighting package as they use the same door handle.
