08 NAV??

hi does anyone know if there is any update software for the 08 nav on the E92 M3??

once in awhile mine NAV screen will just shut down then come back on, or will freeze up then when i shut the car off and turn back on it will be fine. one time the radio didn't work, but when turned the car back on it was fine

it has only happened about 3 times but it is still annoying and i am assuming something is wrong.

has anyone else had this happen or do you know if there is any updates for these years??

i know they updated the 09 for faster speed etc but wondering if there is anything for the 08. i couldn't find any bulletins for it etc

thanks in advance

H

08 nav is pretty much useless. I hate it. Needs a software update bad.

Never had any problems like that, it sounds like there is a problem with the nav unit in your car.

could you elaborate? are you saying you are unable to use it because it crashes, doesnt work, or do you just think it sucks?

That's a silly statement. When you make statements like that, it just causes people to disregard what you say in the future. The 08 nav works just fine.

08 software is ok but I really hate the lag when you start up and searching for street name when you input each letter.

But truly 09 nav software is (I think worth money). very easy to use, brighter, higher resolution screen and no-lagging from harddrive based system.

So my opinion, 08 is overall ok but 09 is truly the good one.

my nav works fine, i am talking about my screen freezing up or just shutting down. doesn't matter what mode it is in could be nav, radio whatever. it will just shut off and go black or it will freeze up. sometimes it comes back on by itself like as if it restarted itself then sometimes i would have to turn car off and when i turn it back on everything is fine.

the nav on my car works just fine other then a delay when punching in data but i don't use it much so i could care less about that

What you are experiencing is a slow cpu processor/slow memory double whammy.

This causes the nav system to slow down (or freeze), because the available processing power and memory are pretty much maxed out.

The 2009 M3's were equipped with a Hard Drive based navigation system, which reads the maps directly from the hard drive itself. (not from accessing the nav disc in the DVD-ROM drive)

It's MUCH faster than the DVD-ROM drive in the 2008 M3's.

The higher LCD screen resolution (pixel count), and the new memory storage for your personal music on the 2009's hard drive are also two additional improvements.

Not sure how you would improve the performance of what you have now...

It's a hardware/technology issue as far as I can tell. Maybe BMW will issue a software update for the 2008 DVD-ROM nav systems. Hopefully that will help improve this annoying drawback, but it would be hard to see how they could fix this issue through a software download.

You sound like the kind of guy that thinks his 1960's black and white TV without a remote works "just fine." If you think the 08 NAV is up to current standards then you're just plain retarded.

That's exactly the kind of response I would have expected given your on-line persona, which is what my note was trying to convey to you. Predictably, you left that part out in your quote of my actual complete post. You missed the point, buddy.

I didn't say it was the greatest piece of nav technology out there or that there weren't better systems. I said it worked, "fine" (for its intended purpose of navigating from Point A to Point B). You said it was "useless." That is not true and was a silly statement.

Nothing for the '08, and I think that there will be no more updates as all BMW are moving towards the HDD iDrive.

So WYSIWYG.

thanks alot for the info. i don't care that it is slow but you are saying that freezing up or shutting off is normal?? that can't be right?? i realize they may not be able to make it work faster but i just want the 2 issues of freezing up and shutting down to go away. when i say freeze up i mean it just freezes and no matter what you push nothing happens i have to shut my car off then restart it to get it to un freeze. then when it shuts down it will go black and in a couple minutes it will come back on. that doesn't seem normal to me. maybe my head unit is going bad??

wow i didn't know the 09 had a hard drive to store your cd's and stuff, damn how big is it 30g hard drive?? shit i thought the 09 only worked faster, had i known the radio had a hard drive i would of got an 09

so is it possible to put the 09 system in my 08 or would i actually need a new head unit inside the car?? i would think you could just switch out the nav comp in the trunk to an 09 one no??

thanks alot for the help

H

No, in my experience "freezing up and shutting off" are not normal. The only slow response I've seen is in entering data into the nav. I've never seen a "freeze."

There are a ton of posts about this, but as far as I know you can't just swap out all of the 08 components for the 09 ones. Everything has to be changed (the screen, the nav/car comp, controller, center console, dvd player, etc. It's very pricey, and there are software coding issues galore.

It sounds like you just need to have your car serviced to fix the problems you are having. Just make a service appointment with your dealership and they will reset/update you nav software. That should fix your freezing issues.

i had same problem as H Bomb. i took it to my dealer to get fixed. due to "end of the year" and "not enough resources" my car got stuck at the dealer for ~4 days. (on going) but my SA updated the statu every day. so far, he talked to factory "specialist" (can't remember what he said) but they were looking into my nav and had a question about my cell phone. i told them i am using virgin mobile (used ot be Helio) Ocean 1. and the SA mentioend something about "not BMW approved phone" and it throw so many error codes. anyway, they updated my nav and doing more tests to make sure it never shuts off or go blank. =) we'll see. i'll keep you guys updated.
