To those with EUR fog light switch
With the switch off the both the inner and outer brake lights (in the fender) work but with the rear fogs on only the outer brake lights come on, at least on my car.
Anybody have the same? |

The fogs are in the trunk lid. The brake light lights are in the fender. There are two brake light bulbs on each side in the fenders. When the fog light switch is in the off position all four brake light bulbs light up when the brake is applied. When the fog light switch is in the on position only the two outer brake light bulbs light when the brake is applied. I know the difference between the US and the Euro and how the brake force works. Again this is in my case. Last edited by Ctm309; 01-24-2010 at 07:21 PM.. |

Sorry to sort of thread jack, but I also have an 09 and have been looking for the fog light switch but have had no luck. Where did you get yours? When I do get it, then I can answer your question

I ended up spending $10 for some legos to modifiy the existing switch to make fog lights functional. Works perfect. I can't remember if the DIY came from this forum. I might be able to get a link later. Or do a search for legos. |

And precisely for people like you, BMWNA does not offer them in the US. Most American's don't have a CLUE what they are..... :-)

Rear Fogs OFF w/ No Brakes: oo[oo ---- oo]oo Rear Fogs On w/ No Brakes: oo[OO ---- OO]oo Rear Fogs On w/ Brakes: OO[OO ---- OO]OO The only way all four bulbs should light up (when rear fogs are off) is during hard braking. If your car is doing this on regular basis, take it in have the dealer look at it. It is probably thinking that you are hard braking all the time..... It might be a bad sensor. Hope this helps..... Sorry about the poor graphics above

I think what OP said was there're TWO brake bulbs on each fender tail, with the fog one being the third. So when there's no fogs, both outer bulbs on each tail light up. And when fogs are on, only ONE bulb per side lights up, rather than all 3.
I haven't checked my car, but the fender tails seem too narrow to house 2 bulbs each IMO, but I could be wrong. At any rate, whatever it is, all M3s are going to do that since they're already prewired. Good evening. |

I'm not really sure what the OP is describing, but TTG got it right. That is how it is supposed to work; that is how mine work.

Uhh I know what a rear fog is, the question was why the euro switch is needed. Also an FYI bmw doesnt offer them because they arent a legal requirement in north america.

The only difference between the switches is a small plastic tab that is removed from the NA switches which disables the fog light funtion. Put that plastic tab back in there and trim the plastic supports on the pushbutton and it works. The pushbutton face is also different... no symbol vs. a fog light symbol. There is a link previously in this thread if you want more details. |
