BMW Service - Good
Started my E92 the other day at 4:30 pm, a Service Engine alert appeared on the dash along with an engine pic, plus a message on the nav screen, “Reduced Power, Okay to Drive.” Car would only go in second gear, and max speed about 20 mph. Since I was 50 miles from home, and 35 miles from the nearest BMW store, clearly the Limp Home Mode would not work. I turned off the car and made a non complimentary remark. So, I called on the trusty I Drive, navigated to the BMW Assist Screen, found “Need Service” then “Perform Service,” thinking the car would call and I would then be connected to an operator. However, nope, not the case. The I Drive stated “ Service was being performed” and the car began making noises here and there. Shortly, I Drive stated “Service Completed.”
I started the car, and the Check Engine light was still illuminated, but the car drove normally, no Limp Home Mode, all gears and at speed. After I began to roll, the incar tel rang, it was BMW Assist asking if I was okay, safe, and they could see the car in motion and wanted to know if the car was rolling okay. They advised they would notifiy my dealer. Right after that, my dealer then called the car and advised that they would wait for my arrival, and that a car would be available for me when I arrived. Two weeks later, the car was returned to my home by the Dealer Service performed: Replaced Power Distribution Block, Replace Faulty Junction Box, Replaced Faulty Brake Pump Relay. All required new components, and evidently, where all this is located was not in a readily accessible location. Car seems to run fine now. That’s BMW Service! Cudos to Valley BMW, Fayetteville, NC vz

Hey, you could have just pressed the 'SOS' button, no?
What you mentioned sounds weird. What the heck is happening while 'performing service'? That's more like 'making a service appointment', no? At any rate, glad you could get rid of the limp mode. Restarting the car can get rid of the limp mode sometimes, and that's what most people do. In addition, limp mode is supposed to only limit rpm to 4,500 or so, not prevent the tranny to shift beyond 2nd; glad I don't have an auto. Finally, it's always nice to hear a nice dealer story, although 2 weeks seems excessive to me. And this is the first time I ever hear of your failures. Take care. Hey, I was amazed as much as any of you. The car experienced some sort of "service" as I could feel, and hear, small sounds. Yes, I know the button above could have been pushed, and that is what I thought was happening instead as I selected I Drive choices. Had the car not returned to somewhat normal, I would have used the SOS button overhead. FYI, rpms seemed to be limited to under 2000, and only 2nd gear.
And btw, I have owned 6 BMWs over the last 14 or so years, and I have experienced nothing but good service from all the dealers that I have come in contact with. I read stories published here that do not favor the service factor as good as mine. Too bad, this should not be the case. vz
