Help with IPOD-non IDrive

My IPOD resets to the beginning of the track that is playing when I shut the car down. For a song playing, that is not a big deal, but I also listen to educational downloads on my commute and it is a PITA to have to FF back to where the program stopped. Anyone know if there is a work around or is this just the way the headunit works?

How about just pausing or stopping the iPod before shutting down the car?
