Do family and friends grill you when cleaning, tinkering, and working on the car?
I got tooled on hard by a 13yr old. I was out early yesterday morning washing the car, and the number one son came out and said; geez dad, didn’t you just wash the car last weekend? Yep, but you can never be too clean buddy. But you only drove it once this week, how dirty could it have gotten? An hour after that he came back out with a cup of coffee for me, and said; OMG, didn’t you wax it last weekend too, dad? You can never have too much protection on the paint, buddy. Two hours after that, he came back out to see if I wanted to shoot some hoops, and said; OMG, are you kidding me, you’re taking the wheels off to wash them? I find it cathartic. What’s that mean? You really need help, dad! Go get the dictionary and go to your room, and don’t come out until you can tell me what that means. Fifteen minutes later, he came back, and said; therapeutic! And you really need some therapy, dad. At least I stopped removing the seats to vacuum. |

I think you son is looking for your attention. Maybe you should consider spending less time cleaning the car and more time with him... If you guys shoot some hoops together first he may even help you clean the car!

I agree with him. If you only drive the car once a week at most you need a wife down with a quick detailer. Taking the wheels off is a monumental waste of time and waxing a car every week? Then again, if you paid 70 grand to let it sit in your garage wasting time and more money on it probably doesn't bother you. But your son is right. Drive it more or spend less time on it. But that's just my opinion. YMMV. |

I know I don't have a M3, but my family encourages me to work on my car... And then they ask my to work on theirs.
But my friends all usually think that I am nuts. If they don't understand it, it's their loss. |

I get the point you are making here. I rarely have free time, but when I do, I frequently use it to wash, wax or do something else to my car. Mind you, this doesn't happen often. My wife thinks its a stupid waste of time, but I think its important to take care of the car.
On a side note, I also took my wheels off to clean them (only once). |

I take my M3 to the nearest car wash and have it cleaned (only when it is actually dirty). I usually do it on weekends and take my 3-year-old daughter with me. The washing process takes ˜15 minutes and my daughter laughs with the car moving through the process with nobody inside. Once we are done, the car is 95% clean and I go home and enjoy the rest of the weekend with my family. Now, if I wanted the car 100% clean, I would have to spend hours of dedicated time cleaning the car myself, removing seats and wheels, waxing and whatnot... I just can't see myself doing this with my daughter or wife asking me to go out or play or do anything else. Call me crazy, but quality time with my family will always come first. The M3 is a nice car but lets not forget that, in the end, it is just a car. Sorry if it sounds obnoxious, but the OP asked for our opinion and I am just being honest...

....priorities are out of order because an enthusiast cleans his car once a week?????? Wow! It's funny how so many people pass judgment with very little personal information about a member. |

Get your son to help you with the car... Ever since my dad got me into cars around age 12 and for years after I'd love helping him with the exterior and interior of the car.

Whenever I'm down in Laguna at my parents' house for the wknd, I take advantage of the hose anda driveway and do a good wash/wax and my mom is always badgering me about spending too much time on the car, but it's only because she knows it's tiring. What she doesn't know is that it's totally worth it for me. My dad will just come by and check on the progress every once in a while and comment on how much better I take care of my car than my sister. No one else mentions anything.
