I-Phone out feature NOT part of Sept/Oct changes

Just to let everyone know I got word from my CA that the September changes will NOT include the I-Phone out feature. Literally only what you see in the change bulletin is what you get. I have documentation of this if anyone wants to see. Just thought I would pass this along.

I'd be interested in seeing this. The July 9th announcement simply says the 6FL iPod option gets these changes, making no distinction between models. It then goes through various model specific changes including those for the M3.

Having dealt with many CA's who aren't properly trained or informed, I'd like to see the documentation please...

iPod/USB Adapter (6FL)

This option has also been enhanced with many exciting features.

iPod One-wire integration: No longer will an iPod connection require the “Y-cable”. The original iPod USB cable is all that is required to connect the device to the vehicle. This simplifies the connection by not requiring the aux-input. The music is transferred directly from the iPod digitally to the HiFi system via USB. Therefore as of September, the Y-Cable will no longer be included with iPod/USB Adapter (6FL).

Album Cover Art: The ability to display album cover art will also be included with the iPod/USB Adapter. If cover art is contained in the metadata of the song, it will show on the vehicle display while the song is played.

Voice Control of Devices: In combination with the voice control system included with navigation, the driver can control external devices and select genre, artist, album, and song title by simply speaking the words.

Mobile Phone Device Driver Update: Lastly, in combination with BMW Assist, the USB port of the iPod/USB Adapter can be used to upload new mobile phone and audio player device drivers. (Release timing for this feature and device driver availability are subject to change.)

Nothing here mentions iPod out, i am going to guess the above features will be part of the September upgrade, and will be ready for the I pod out functionality when it arrives, as these cars will have the new combox. I think the iPod out has to do with how it speaks with the phone, using its menus on th drive screen, and most importantly able to take advantage of future apps/software upgrades. iPod out was something apple came up with for ios 3 to allow venders off all types to better utilize the iPhone/iPod with hardware. Like the apple stores hand held iPod based checkout.

These are all just my observations. I am a little disappointed because I have a June production and aug delivery. I always knew spomthing better would be coming out - just not before my car was even delivered

Yeah I am disappointed also. I'm hoping the line that says " the USB port of the iPod/USB Adapter can be used to upload new mobile phone and audio player device drivers." can be used to update so that the Ipod out feature will work. If not it's no big deal. It's just another toy and I'm sure someone will come out with a MOD sooner or later. LOL.

That document refers to a July 7th announcement of iPod Out however, the July 9th announcement of the September changes (posted here) already had the corrections noted, as no iPod Out feature was mentioned.

Cover Art display is supported by the iPod One-wire connection, not the iPod Out feature. Perhaps that is where the confusion is coming from.

Well since the USB port can now be used to upload new phone support/software, one can only assume the hardware is switched for Sept. I'm guessing we will see a software update that enables iPod out

What type of apps would support the interface? Do the new BMW's have a touchscreen?

Umm, yeah.. unless you planned on using a FM transmitter, how'd you expect the iPod to send an audio signal to the car?

True.. I'm sure you guys will be working in retro'ing into existing cars so I'm not too worried about not having it now. I just hope it doesn't cost too much.

The new system is supposed to work with your cable from Apple.

Cheers.

My 2011 M3 was built 2 weeks ago, but I haven't picked it up yet. I guess that it comes with the "old" system.

So according to you, the iPod/USB connection does not allow my ipod to send an audio signal to the car? Then what am I paying for? And why would I want a FM transmitter (btw, I use one in my DD) altogether with an iPod connection? Sorry but you're confusing the heck out of me.

Can someone post a picture with the "old" iPod connector please?

If I remember correctly, your 6FL option will not include the OEM iPod cable as your M3 is Military Sales (it is included in the USA); you paid $350 for the option and in the USA is $400. You will need to order one at your local German dealer.

You buy the USB option and then have to use the y cable. This cable you plug into the USB and Aux port. This allows you to play you iPod/iPhone through the aux item on idrive. Starting with the Sept production all you need is the apple supplied cable and plug it into the USB port. You don't need the y cable anymore. In fact cars won't ship with the y cable from when I posted the september bulletin channges. Is this right? Someone please confirm.

You got it...

Pre-Sept build = Y-cable which you get as part of 6FL (have to buy in the case of Military Sales)

Post-Sept build = Apple cable which came with your iWhatever
